Internet Dating Scam: Fake Soldiers

I just came across a post on “A Soldier’s Perspective” discussing a rather disgusting and disturbing trend that has guys posing as soldiers on Internet dating sites. Here’s the quote from CJ’s:

The latest trend involves trolling internet dating sites and convincing women that they are honorable Soldiers who have fallen in love and would do anything to communicate with the object of their affection. But, because they are deployed to Afghanistan or Iraq, they need you to sign up for an expensive telecommunications service like “Military TELEX” in order to make that happen. They profess unending love as their motivator and, unfortunately, many women have fallen for it.

The BIG red flag here is that the guy is asking for money. NEVER fall for that con.

If you come across anyone on a dating site who is asking you for money, regardless of the reason; block them immediately from further contact and then report them to the internet dating service.

You can also check out who is really behind their email address…

AND / or their telephone number…

To read specific details about about one incident, read CJ’s post “The New Military Dating Scam”.

To All: I recently had a conversation with David Phillips who has said he was a Sgt in the Army. I’ve known David was a scammer for a while now, but recently he once again tried for money. Stated once again he needed it for his leave. I said I had a Military lawyer that was a friend and that I knew a lot about the Military. His comment was, “Oh”. I laughed and told him the Military did not charge their men for leave. Then he says he needs it for his LPC. I said sorry, what is LPC ? He says his Liberty pass. I smiled to myself, as I thought I remembered Robert saying Liberty pertained to the Navy !! So I called him on it, and finally he says, yes It is all a lie. I said so what do you really need the money for ? He comes back and asks, “if I tell you will you still send the money afterwards”? I said no. Have had no contact since. It pays to read these posts. Thank you Robert for all the information you post. I was able to use it.

TO DeANNE – Your computer programs have a setting so that you can block incoming emails from anyone you want to block. Delete them from your contacts and then block them.Your programs would be Google, Yahoo, or whatever. You will no longer receive their mail. I save this one for the relentless. Or you can just ignore them, as some will tire of you doing this and move on. If they are calling you on the phone, then ignore the call, or change your number. They have to pay to call, so won’t want to waste time calling if they get no answer. This has worked for me. They usually buy a calling card. I always say I cannot call long distance. Hope this helps.

    Sandra,
We’re out of Iraq, so he is a scammer.

    April,
Your AKO account is the same for your whole career, orders don’t mean a thing. You don’t get a new hotmail email when you move do you?
No parents? Ask when they died and their names. Verify at http://www.fold3.com/search.php .
Embassy security is a job for the Marines, not the Army.
Getting upset is a way to control you and make you stop digging.
Handler? What is he, a dog?
Fort Benning is in GA not OH.
Special Ops training is in Florida or North Carolina.
Special Ops does not do guard duty at embassies.
Has to go to OC all the time? Orange County?
The pics he sent, are the like 3mb or more? Then they are real, if they are small then he stole them off a site.
Special Forces do not guard embassies.
18Z is a senior sergeant MOS. Google “Special forces MOS” and you see lists to pick from. You need to hit him with questions in a row so he cannot google, he has to KNOW the answer. What’s your DOR? PEBD? MRD? MOS? He will take a while to look all those up.

    He is indeed a scammer.

  9. Can anyone tell me what is the next step to take if a fake won’t leave you alone?

  10. Hi Robert,
I was contacted by a Rubin Coaster not an any dating sites though. It was a app on my Iphone that I had installed called skout. He messaged me on there a few times and then asked if I had yahoo messenger. So i did, things all seemed well. Something made me start looking into dating scams and when I started researching it all. I am still not sure if he is a scammer or not. So if somebody could please help me out I would greatly appreciate it. Here are the thngs I have done to slip him up or to get him to stop. The first sign was I asked him for his AKO, and says cant give it out due to orders being sent to him. Says he has no parents, lives in Vegas but was raised by his Uncle. This is when I got more courious. Says he is stationed in Abuja, Nigeria. Working at the US Embassy protecting the Ambassodor and Diplomats. As we continue to talk he will tell me things that are going on over there, and I will google them and there will be nothing about it at first. Then about 15 mins later I will re google and then there is something posted on the web about what is going on over there. He had told me about the bombing of the church on xmas day over there, that things will start getting really bad if the president does what he wants. Not sure what he was talking about, until Jan 1st the oil situation over there and they went on strike. I told him that I was looking for anything about him online and he said I would be unable to find anything, and got upset with me for doing so. I told him that I was protecting myself and if you couldn’t understand that then I don’t know what to tell him. Thinking that he would no longer contact me after that. He replies he understands, and at this point I have a # calling me and ask if its him, he says no its his handler calling me out of Arkansas. He calls me about 3 times a week, not for very long though, just to say hi or something stupid. I told him I had a funeral to go to cuz one of my friends boyfriends dad was just killed over seas by a IED, and that all 4 men were from the unit by a town I live by, With out me even saying the name of who I was talking about, he says he knows the soldier and went to Fort Benning, OH with him for Sps Ops training. He tells me he has to go to OC all the time, when we are talking. He says his full Name is Rubin William Coaster, he has sent me quite a few pics of him in and out of uniform. I just asked him his MOS the other day, and he says thats special forces, I stated again what was his MOS, he says 18z. I have called him out on about everything I can think of and yet he still insist he is real. If you could in some way help I would really appreciate it. And if he is a scammer we can add him to the list as well.

hello rose i just read your comment . i think it would be a wonderfull idea if we could all sign a petition or something and get this on the news i would be a super great idea. since i come from canada it would be hard for me to go in the usa .but this is on my mind to go on usa tv and try to find these scamer . in my case it would be my dream to find the real soldier and the fake one to be caugh and put in jail .

  12. sandra pattison says

Ok please tell me how to do it? Or if you can kindly do it I only know him by name ‘sgt donald gray cox’ says he is still in Iraq serving..just plse give us a yes or no..thanks. camp victory I think.

  13. MSG Robert McLaughlin says

    Janet,
Sounds like your scammer got the first and last names backwards. Ever notice how simple normal American names seem rare from these folks? Well the guy you are talking with now, ask to see his ID card and ask him questions about the military like his rank, where he trained, what’s his MOS, and so on. And if he says it’s all classified it is a scammer.

    Sandra,
You have been here long enough to know that! If you know anyone in the military we can look up others to see if they are real or not. Takes only minutes.

  14. Hi everyone, I posted a scammer on this site about a month ago and he goes by the name of Sgt. Paul Anderson. If you come across this guy, delete him right away. I want to ask if anyone is willing to help get this word out to the tv networks about these scammers. You see by the time they find sites likes these, it;s to late. I think we as victims and friends and family of victims should try harder to get this message across to all who may fall victim. I was thinking if everyone on this site would sign a floating petition or something and our stories and send them to some networks throughout the country. Maybe someone will pick it up and put it on air where more people could see this information. Is there anyone here willing to help me try. I know some of you may say whats the point, but it can’t hurt to try..

  15. janet theriault says

  16. sandra pattison says

Hi All is there anyway you can actually find out if there is such a person serving in the military at all..As if there was some simple way just to verify. yes or no..would save a lot of people heartache and trouble and to not lose any of there money either..If there is a simple way to check please let me know..kind regards sandy

  17. MSG Robert McLaughlin says

    Rachel,
I don’t know if there is or is not a David Starlock, I doubt it though. I can check but there’s no point, there is nothing he or anyone can do about a scammer who will just go get another name. We have to be alert on OUR end for the bad guys. You are right through, he is indeed a scammer if he will not provide the requested information. Score one for the good guys!

    Stella,
If he sends you pictures are they small, like the size you get off a website, or the size that comes out of a digital camera? I bet it is the former so don’t trust it. Special Ops is NOT a unit, it is a command with many units under it, so if he does not tell his unit then he is full of hot air. As for finding the real soldier, I don’t do that, I only find the fakes.

  19. Hi Robert.

I was contacted by this soldier by the name of Dave Starlock on a Christian website called Christian dating for free on the 27th of December, 2011. He had pictures of him wearing his US military uniform but the name on the uniform was scratched off. He wanted to chat outside the chat room on a yahoo/MSN chat, which we did. He was pretty decent. After few days he was banned from the site for reason being he is a scamer. He claimed that he is in Libya on a tour of duty and his unit is the bomb squad. He lost his parents at the age of 10 in an auto crash and he his divorced with a daughter named Vera, he in fact sent me a pic of the daughter with him. He has a Face book profile with US military uniforms, location as Tripoli Libya and his university & school details as in Texas.

I confronted him and asked him for his MOS, APO & US MIL ID, he refused to give the details. i know these are not classified, I have stopped communicating with him since, the reason why I’m sending this email is to know if there is actually a Dave Starlock or who ever is in the picture that’s posted on the site and which were sent to me is actually is him.If there is a Dave Starlock who is working for US Military then to bring it to his notice that some one is using his name/pictures and impersonating him to be as Dave Starlock and to advice him immediately so that he can take necessary actions. I still have my doubts if he is a scamer or not.

i googled him and there were pix of the same person in civilian uniform and i military uniform on different sites like linkedin & on 333friends. i did send an email to theUS MIL CID department.

I think some one is trying to or would be in hte process of trying to scam me. He claims to be a military man in Libya and is a Specials Opp. He hasn’t asked me for money as I have told him I think he’s a scammer and not to ever ask me for any & he said he wouldn’t. He goes by the name of Brian Howard & he messaged me through facebook, which he is on. There are at least 6 pictures he has on his facebook all of whcih are army ones, I would like to know where they get these pictures from (and if possible I could find the ‘true’ soldier in these pictures)?
