Internet Dating Scam: Fake Soldiers

I just came across a post on “A Soldier’s Perspective” discussing a rather disgusting and disturbing trend that has guys posing as soldiers on Internet dating sites. Here’s the quote from CJ’s:

The latest trend involves trolling internet dating sites and convincing women that they are honorable Soldiers who have fallen in love and would do anything to communicate with the object of their affection. But, because they are deployed to Afghanistan or Iraq, they need you to sign up for an expensive telecommunications service like “Military TELEX” in order to make that happen. They profess unending love as their motivator and, unfortunately, many women have fallen for it.

The BIG red flag here is that the guy is asking for money. NEVER fall for that con.

If you come across anyone on a dating site who is asking you for money, regardless of the reason; block them immediately from further contact and then report them to the internet dating service.

You can also check out who is really behind their email address…

AND / or their telephone number…

To read specific details about about one incident, read CJ’s post “The New Military Dating Scam”.

Hi Beverly – yes indeed, over a year and a half time period, not a single one turned out to be a real soldier – ALL SCAMMERS. Now some are saying their from the UK but working in Nigeria for oil companies. I just had one say recently he was from the UK and working for an oil company, and then a few days later says he is working for a communications company. I called him on it, and he said oh the oil company was when he first got there, but now he is with this communications company. Oh right !!! He also messed up by saying at first he was from the UK and then a few days later he was from Ireland…this one hasn’t got his lies straight. He’s using the email chasewilliams770 in case it pops up elsewhere.

TO JESSICA NICOLE: Yes I knew he would return. I can see what he is. In the past 1-1/2 years I have been contacted by at least 50 soldiers and NONE were who they claimed to be.Each one turned out to be a scammer. I was originally contacted on Facebook by my first one posting a pic of a soldier. I however was naive and didn’t find this site until it was too late. Fortunately you have found it in time. He used all the tactics they use, love letters, promising to come , wanting me forever, marriage, the whole bit. In 3 months time he had me hooked on him and I sent $3000 for his leave to come to me. He never came. After he took my money he came up with excuses for not coming that coincided the the news headlines so I believed him. Oh they are good and know their profession. Everything is well laid out and planned. Most of them belong to a world wide syndicate and he sounds like he may just from the way he is handling you. “He can’t stop talking to you” – a way to make you think he is falling for you, so you will reciprocate his feelings. You “found the true owner of the pic’s” – probably not. He posted that up himself (the scammer). No real person would want to play games with you or trick you and real Soldiers don’t have time for games and barely have time to socialize on the Internet. Think about it. Their fighting a war. Only the scammer would want to trick you. No matter who you confront, he has it set up that you will be confronting him. It is a profession to a scammer, a job and they cover all angles. Simply ask him to email you using his .mil email address. One is issued to each Military person. If he says he can’t for security reasons, that is a lie. I would bet all, you don’t get one. Be careful, it sounds like your getting involved – mistake #1. Check out “Nigerian Fake Soldier Scams on Facebook” here on this site. I am sorry, but you have a scammer. I just don’t want to see anyone else go through the painful heartbreak I did.

Yes Margaret you are correct he has come back 2 days later saying that he has been advised by his other sodiers to stop contact because it is messing with his cocentration.,but he just cant stop talking to me. Now heres the kicker… I found the true owner of the pictures he is using. I saw that they were years old… but I still dont know if this guy is a scammer or he is the real guy playing tricks on me…..The”scammer” seems to know details of the real soldier from his Facebook account which is set on private. I want to confront the real soldier but i think I want to play along with the game a little bit longer. I will definately know not to send money. Thanks for the website!

  4. Margaret Rodgers says

TO KIM; I was so happy to see you were aware and did not fall for this scammer. Hurray.

  5. Margaret Rodgers says

TO JESSICA NICOLE; Three weeks is not usually enough time for them to ask. They take their time and want to be sure they have you hooked emotionally. Oncce he feels he has you, then he will begin to sprout his plan. He is playing a game with you regarding no contact for 3 months – hoping you will panic and be afraid he is going to go away which is a mind control tactic they use. He is trying to gain control in hopes you will stop searching the websites on scammers and stop your doubts. I am reasonably sure by what I read from you that he is a scammer. He may wait and come back to see if his tactic has worked on you. If he presents you with a request for money in any fashion – that is a sure thing he is a scammer. Read the posts on here and pay close attention. You will be educated.

  6. Margaret Rodgers says

FOR MONICA ERIKSSON: STOP! You are being scammed. There are no fees charged to our Military for leaves, or retirement. Scammers are notorious for using two first names, such as “Rick Steve”.They ask for funds to be wired through western union or moneygram. Please read the posts on this website and pay special attention to the posts made by MSG Robert Mclaughlin. These posts will educate you on scammers. One question you can ask them is to send you an email from their .mil email ID. All have one and if they refuse then they are fake. The scammers will tell you anything to convince you to send money and that they are real. They will ask you for more and more money, especially if you have sent any at all to them. That is their sole purpose , to clean you out totally of money if they can. Once your broke, they tend to move on. Don’t be a victim.

  7. Hi Its Isabel These stories i am reading Please these guys are fake. 10. Have you ladies seen the poster boy for sergeants he is a staff by the name of James and the scammers use his photo. Beware he a white headed male and ranges between 49 to 55 in age. Southern area usually Texas or Georgia. I have found it 7 times a week and reported it to match . Com. Used the name Davis Berczek with me . Scammed thousands posing as a soldier in Afghanistan . Great on bs lines . Sends lots of photos even personal of this James. Ladies beware and have any of you heard of this one. I contacted miltary and they did not care figure that one

  11. jessica nicole says

I am trying to email isabel to join her support group and it will not work. I myself have been scammed by a man claiming to be in the military. He sent me photos,we talked on the phone. He sent me many heart felt emails. We have been in contact for 3 weeks. He has not asked me for anything. Although he has gotten into my head. I expressed my doubts to him from the beginning. He told me not to doubt him(of course) Well two days ago I came across a few websites on military scams. i expressed doubts to him again. He was angry and hurt. And now has said that we should not have contact until he is home from Afghanistan in three months.
I dont know how I let him get to me the way he did but I feel so foolish,at the same time I am still not sure if he is a scammer or not

  12. Monica Eriksson says

Hello, I have been asked for payment through Western Union, for releasing a Sgt. Rick Steve in Afghanistan. I have already paid for that and they asked me for more money to send for his flying ticket here to Sweden. Now I want to know if this man is for real, and if so, is he wounded as they informed me about? They have sent me a lot of information from the latest bomb attacks in Afghanistan after the American president visited there to sign some important documents together with the Afghanistan government. Please, let me know the truth! Grateful in advance.
    Monica, Sweden

  13. Beware of a man going by the name of Brett Miller. He says he is in the army, has an 11 year old daughter and is divorced. Very sweet talker and writes beautiful love letters. Being prior military he played on my patriotic side and I sent my laptop. He claimed to have an important package a diplomat was going to bring to me which is where I new something was not right. Then he ended up in Ghana and wanted money to come home. That for sure did not add up. Military would pay for them to come home. He asked for money and I told him no. Anyway he is blocked and I want others to be aware. Please be careful ladies.

  14. Done marine need any help in money for to come home or for any thing?
This one soldier i am talking to keep telling me its ok to help him with money. He say you know we are just poor soldier.
Done the soldier need help with any money?

    kathy

To Lori Morrow : I have received many letters in the past with them using pretty much this same scenario. It’s pretty standard. The same idea, just different name used, and ages of children with different names of children used. I have never been contacted by a soldier that was really a soldier. Everyone has been a scammer. He would have eventually asked for whatever he was after. Sometimes its money, or they try the phone scam, or wanting you to accept goods for them. Its all a scam. They are the very lowest form of life we have.

  16. Lori Morrow says

I want to know if there are others that have had experience with a “sgt. Christopher Reinhardt” he contacted me on a dating web site and after starting conversation with me (he never asked for money) I googled his name and saw his supposed picture and the same story he told me with different names. He is in Afghanistan (that was my first clue) says he has been in the army for 17 years. His wife died 3 years ago and his little girls 7 and 9 need a mom. They live with his Mom in England and his Dad was American. This is the same story I’ve seen now over and over with different names attached. It is horrible that these guys posing as military men are nothing but ratty little cowards that try to run scams on lonely and patriotic women

  17. Margaret Rodgers says

TO JULIAJOY : Yes it is a scam. The Army does not charge them to send them home. Neither do they pay for a leave or retirement. The old buy me a phone scam has been used by them for a long time. All the Military ones are scammers. The pictures are stolen. It is a world wide syndicate with usually 6 to 12 men working one person. You’ll have to block him. They don’t give up easy. Don’t be a victim.

  18. Ladies, be aware of “Sgt. Julio Perez” he was last known to be on ChristianMingleand he claims to be 44yrs, a Christian & and is well versed in the Bible, claims to be a Sgt. for the US.Army & even a Dr. ….and that he’s based in Afghanistan. and has been in the military for 15 years ….it’s a SCAM!!!
He will spend hours with you on the internet and chat and claims he lives in “San Diego, that his wife died 5yrs ago in a car accident and has no children” and he asks for money to get a satellite phone and $ to come back home..and he will even send you 2 other pictures aside from the 1 on the profile.
    BE AWARE!!!

  19. MSG Robert McLaughlin says

I just saw a memo from October 2011 saying to NOT copy your military ID card, so they may not do that, but there are PLENTY of other things to see. How about a copy of their orders? How about an award they received in the past? How about a regular driver’s license?

If there is a soldier in Nigeria who is there legitimately he is working at the Embassy and will have an email address ending in state.gov, but there are but a handful, honest. And you have ALL the scammers in Nigeria, so don’t count on it being real.

You know, a while back I’d see 50 posts saying “Oh my gosh I was scammed for thousand$$$!” and today I see very few. I see those who know it is fake or who came here first before sending money. Good work everyone, the word is getting out!

  20. Margaret Rodgers says

To Sharon : Yes that is another one of the scams they try. Looks like he got his name from a city here in California. It is called Richmond, California. It is east of San Francisco. No they don’t quit, we just have to know the way they operate to avoid them.

  21. Margaret Rodgers says

To Katie : I was told there are no military troops in Nigeria. At least not American anyway. My source was legit. Most likely, you have a scammer. Sounds like it. See post by Isabel also. Ask him to email you with his military email ID. All have one and it ends in .Mil. If he is real, he will do that for you. Please read other posts on here, it will educate you. Don’t be a victim.

  22. There are no american soldiers in Nigeria another scammer lying all us military have email ending .mil. Forget this guy definate scammer from Nigeria or Ghana.

  23. This soldier is in Nigeria, are there army soldiers there?
I ask him for his ako email address,he say i see about it,but i don;t think it working any more.he said that about his ako emai and can;t give it/Done it mean he is not a soldier?
    thank you

  24. Someone sent me a private message in Facebook, introduced himself as Sgt. Philip McDonald of the US Military. He has a photo of some guy wearing a blue jacket and a bonnet, by his look, he’s a legit American. He added me in my yahoo id. He is using the same profile picture as in Facebook. When he contacted me in yahoo messenger, he said his name is Philip McDonald Burke-we chatted for a while- he is using “sgtphilburke”. He claimed to be deployed in West Africa Border, as a serviceman going against the boko haram. with a 12-year old daughter named kim, wife died 3 years ago due to heart failure. When I asked him about the military life, he can’t answer, he usually changes the topic, his net connection would go off and when he gets back, he would be apologetic, and professing his undying love, etc… he will marry me once he gets back to the US, so everything sounded strange, i didn’t fall for him, as his grammar is way way off for an american. I tried researching about the boko haram, until i read an article about the military romance scam. So, i confronted him about what i found out, he said, he’ll log in using the military server, which never came. I am very sure, this guy i was talking to is a nigerian. I’ve dealt with nigerians and they have the same culture– scammers, take advantage and users! shame on them! i feel sorry for the US soldiers who are innocents which faces and photos are being used to lure their victims. I hope there would be no more victims of this scamming, girls on the dating site, be vigilant. keep your head above your shoulders. Don’t be a Victim. you nigerian scammers– f u all
