Internet Dating Scam: Fake Soldiers

I just came across a post on “A Soldier’s Perspective” discussing a rather disgusting and disturbing trend that has guys posing as soldiers on Internet dating sites. Here’s the quote from CJ’s:

The latest trend involves trolling internet dating sites and convincing women that they are honorable Soldiers who have fallen in love and would do anything to communicate with the object of their affection. But, because they are deployed to Afghanistan or Iraq, they need you to sign up for an expensive telecommunications service like “Military TELEX” in order to make that happen. They profess unending love as their motivator and, unfortunately, many women have fallen for it.

The BIG red flag here is that the guy is asking for money. NEVER fall for that con.

If you come across anyone on a dating site who is asking you for money, regardless of the reason; block them immediately from further contact and then report them to the internet dating service.

You can also check out who is really behind their email address…

AND / or their telephone number…

To read specific details about about one incident, read CJ’s post “The New Military Dating Scam”.

  1. Beware with military single website is not the real soldier answer this . the website create them self , after you upgrade and pay with your credit card . and open the mail in box ( 26) apparently most from the website not from the soldiers.

  2. I think this is fake, the website create fake respond, and to make me believe this soldiers answer or respond , apparently the website sending a respond is not the party interest or the soldiers. Beware after you pay with your credit card and you open all the email most from the website

  3. I met paul megson, he is a captain in the army. He is stationed at Fort Bragg. He says he’s in special ops, and he wanted to go on leave, he needed to pay $4000.00 to go on leave. He said his money was frozen until he retires. So i sent $300.00 for his leave, but i dont have the funds to pay any more, he says he cant cancell the. because he was supose to be deployed, and didnt go because of the leave request. Now he says if i dont pay the rest he will be jailed and kicked out of service.I have talked to someone saying he’s the commander, and if i dont pay he will be jailed.I have looked his email up and it dont come up to him,but another soldier, his commanders phone comes up to another state not N.C., he says his name and email dont show up because he special ops.I want to know if what he says about being jailed over leave is true.He says he cant pay for his own leave.Do they have to pay for their own leave home even if its an emergency leave.I must know.

To Gloria: Regarding your Paul Megson and the calls showing Utah and Missouri. I once read an article where these scammers can have calls re-routed. How exactly it is done i can’t remember the explanation. However they have it set up where they can be say in Nigeria, or Ghana, and have the call show it is coming from say Utah but then the call is routed back to them where ever they may be without you realizing it. Pretty damn sneaky. This is probably what you had. I also have had them pull this on me too.

Everyone : Posting this again…When you come in contact with a person who says he is in the Military and he asks you for money, phones, gadgets, laptops, help with his leave, or open a bank account for him, please , these are all scams.

  6. Margaret Rodgers says

To Cindy Green: I’m uncomfortable with your guy also. First the Military deal in communications. It is one of the most important features that they do deal with. Imagine if they didn’t have a good system !! To think they don’t is ludicrous. Trust me it’s all trash he’s feeding you. I don’t know how he pulled off the poster showing your name but pretty sure he faked it somehow. I have to admit that one was clever. It’s the story about the communications taking a long time that gave him away however. Sometimes they will leave for awhile and then come back to see if you have “missed” them enough to grant their request. If your real fortunate, he’s moved on. Count your blessing.

To Everyone: I posted a scammer using the id of meetjeffturner. Well i told him i knew he was a scammer that I knew the man in the picture he was posting and his name was not Jeff Turner. So I said how about telling me who you really are ? So he says he is actually an ex-soldier and is a bodyguard for a Libyan who is an important person there. He asked if I could send him some money so he could give it to his Mom. Pffffffffff, ladies this is how they are……..seriously. Now he is dripping with words of love all the while he is lying threw his teeth. It’s so thick it is down right boring. By the way he is using the picture of Mateo and there are at least 20 to 30 of his posted on the Internet all using different email ID’s.

Gloria – so sorry but he got you good. I have been contacted by Mark Miller. He used some other alias’s also. You can report those names to the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) http://www.ic3.gov/default.aspx. Post them with pic’s on Romancescam.com and Scamwarners.com also.

Debbie – the Military will not release any information on the servicemen for security reasons I have been told.

  10. I met this man on line from the web site military hookups, we hit it off, his name is paul megson suposedly. His email is captplatesuffy1@ yahoo.com. I do know the email isnt his, it belongs to another capt. by the same name . I gave him money towards hiss leave, he says they have to pay for insurance for when their on leave and to be paid when on leave. He has even had his commander text me. I asked for his ako address and his unit id number, to show me proof and he said he couldn’t because it would put him in danger because he is special forces and he coul die. He is suspose to be station at Fort Bragg in N.C.. i traced the number that the captain called from and it comes back from utah. The number that the commander text me from came back from missouri, it think it was. I did photo search and it comes up no where. Beware! Its a scam.

  13. Been talking to this guy on Yahoo messenger for over a month meet him on Match .com, after a while things got pretty intense, I was truly falling for the guy, he sent me pictures of him his family, even sent me a picture of him with a poster with my name on it telling me he loved me from Kabul. And he was having internet issues and then the next thing was he asked if I would help him with the internet that he had been trying to purchase one and could I help, he was having problems getting the money to them, he even sent me the sight of the place he was trying to make the purchase, my response to him was I felt uncomfortable about that and would not do that but did not mean I didn’t care for him. He sent me an email that day saying he was sorry he asked and if I didn’t hear from him the communication network had crashed that the army would take forever to get it up and running again it has been 15 days sense I have heard from him makes no sense. his name is Myles Hendrix, he says he is a Sargent Major in the Army been in for over 23 yrs and is 54 yrs old, can anyone tell me anything I need to hear.

  14. I met this guy named douglas w. schofield on the dating site date hook up. He’s an attractive man, we talked for months, he said he lived in a nearby town, but after awhile when it was all over, i sent him a laptop, 500 cash for leave, a cell phone, t shirts, and snacks. Then contact stopped. I was devastated. I then saw his pictures on other web sites under the names of Russell Smith, Paul Green, Ricky Smith, Steven Morgan,Steven Murphy, Mark MillerAnd Richard Smith oasis, and many more. I want to know who i can file a complaint against him with.

Kim: When you accept people on your Facebook page that you do not know, this gives them access to your friend list. Many scammers do this in order to gain access and go for new victims. Don’t subject your friends to scammers.

  16. Margaret Rodgers says

Bonnie – yes dear the Military, at least US, as far as I know, are not chasing Boko Haram criminals in Africa.

  17. Margaret Rodgers says

Hi Everyone: Here is one I need to report. Going by the email ID of “meetjeffturner”. This one claims he is in Libya. Giving me same old love stories and etc. He wants me to open a bank account here in the states so his commander can deposit his “leave money” into it for him. Then he wants me to withdraw the money and send it to him. What a bunch of trash talk. Pls anyone out there, do not fall for this scam. I am so worried some naive woman out there will fall for this dangerous scam.

  18. Ladies….the likely hood of you finding the “man you fell in love with” to warn him his pics are being used in a scam is highly unlikely. I have even heard that some of the pic used are of deceased military men. The last name of your soldier may be correct as it is on his uniform, helmet, but who knows what his first name may be. It’s best if you put this behind you as a learning lesson and move on…

  19. Hi, I have been chatting to a Canadian solider in Afghanistan, he has not asked for any money however he did say that he put in a request to come home to Ontario.

Said that he had an interview from the department concerning his transfer back home.
Said “it seems that the military will be contacting you through email or phone to make verification about us cause they are always concerned about our welfare”

Every email he has sent me says the following sent from military pager wireless handheld with a register trade mark symbol ( always at the end of the email)

I’m not sure if I should believe him after reading about other people being scammed by so called military men

  20. Sgt Matthew Dunn if u are a fake and a scammer than move your ass please.

  21. I am looking for the real John kepley if anyone can help please contact me at my email address thank you

  22. Davidsmith2840 and Allen_johnson3190 both or maybe the same person
    fake military personnel

  23. Margaret Rodgers says

To Debbie – the Military is not going to give out information on our servicemen because they protect their privacy. I know because I tried to find one once. If you have pictures, go to google browser and click on Image. Put the picture in and it will tell you if the pictures have been posted before, when, where, and why. A good way to see if the picture has been used in other scams.

  24. Margaret Rodgers says

To Sandra – your scammer Calvin Witt is also known as Christopher Witt, and Christian Witt. Sometimes uses the name of Walsh. Just move on and read the posts on here. Chalk it up to a lesson learned.

  25. Margaret Rodgers says

To Michelle – please read our posts on here. Never send money to someone you don’t know. You padded a scammer’s pocket. You got no letter from his CO (Commander) and he’s not stuck in Dubai. If the truth be known, he probably is from Dubai. You receive any emails from him ? If so, trace the ip number. Anyway, they don’t pay for leaves. You got scammed. Delete and block and do some reading on our posts here.
