Internet Dating Scam: Fake Soldiers

I just came across a post on “A Soldier’s Perspective” discussing a rather disgusting and disturbing trend that has guys posing as soldiers on Internet dating sites. Here’s the quote from CJ’s:

The latest trend involves trolling internet dating sites and convincing women that they are honorable Soldiers who have fallen in love and would do anything to communicate with the object of their affection. But, because they are deployed to Afghanistan or Iraq, they need you to sign up for an expensive telecommunications service like “Military TELEX” in order to make that happen. They profess unending love as their motivator and, unfortunately, many women have fallen for it.

The BIG red flag here is that the guy is asking for money. NEVER fall for that con.

If you come across anyone on a dating site who is asking you for money, regardless of the reason; block them immediately from further contact and then report them to the internet dating service.

You can also check out who is really behind their email address…

AND / or their telephone number…

To read specific details about about one incident, read CJ’s post “The New Military Dating Scam”.

  4. I met a man on 2be dating site he name was calvin witt he asked for me to join msn which I don’t have so we exchanged contacts on Skype, he told me he was 51 and due to be deployed from afgan in 3 months time and would like to come to find a good woman so he can retire in the uk. we got on really well and was chatting every day and night for about an hour each time, as time went by I found myself falling for this man, he seemed genuine and often mentioned his friend Anthony who was deploying to austraila, we could not speak on the phone because he didn’t have a mobile so like an idiot I sent him a mobile, he rung me twice and his voice rung alarm bells as he didn’t sound much like an American but sounded more African, I questioned this after our call and he said that he was just trying to talk slowly so I could understand his accent, the final straw was when he asked me to lay out some money for his leave and he sent me an email link to read as to why I needed to pay the money which was £850.. when I told him no way he asked what was wrong and I told him that I had been on this web site and read that no soilder needs anyone to request there leave and it wouldn’t cost money.. I was very firm with him, in the end he owned up to me to who he was and said that he felt so ashamed for what he had done and didn’t want to hurt me because he said I was a very nice prson, he told that the phone I sent him he had sold it to pay for his school fee,s and there are many doing this and once they leave school university they stop doing it, this man was a 21 year old from Nigeria and told me I was his 1st scam and he didn’t want to do it to anyone else because he had feelings for me, what a joke. he even asked me if I could help him find out how to get a working visa to come to the uk to work but was afraid that I would get him arrested.. the name he use was calvin witt sgt and the photos were fab and very good looking soilder he has facebook in calvin witt, calvin calvin, and calvin wright, I have an address were I sent the mobile phone and would like to know who I should forward it too hope you can help me stop this scammer

  5. I recently met a man on a dating site who instantly professed his love for me. Of course I was suspicious right away. He has asked me to open a bank account so he can send me money to obtain a military calling card so I we can talk. It sounded like it could be somewhat legit because he said he would send me money, then he said he would be putting $8,000 in the account because he needs to “clear his gold and ship it to me” before he comes back to me. I’m pretty sure that solidified the scam, but it was clever because it made me second guess myself when he was offering to give me money.

For Everyone: I may have reported a Mark Johnson before but I want to be sure. I am now definitely sure he is a scammer. Has been trying to get me to turn over to him my banking information. Claims he has lots of money he wants to deposit into my account ( for us) LOL. After refusing him for the second time yesterday, he suddenly did not say how much he” loved me” anymore, but came gushing forth with “what a nasty f-ing thing I was describing my genitals. I don’t recommend this but he was so syrupee sweet I took my time until I got him so frustrated I brought out his true colors. He has an account on Facebook with a picture of a nice man with a child on his knee as his profile picture( and I’m sure it is stolen)..

  7. Margaret Rodgers says

To Heather : Yes I think you already know the answers to your questions. TOTAL SCAM right down the line, all the way. You are right, civilians have ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with their taking leave. Once again, leave is taken from their accrued time and requested by them. There is no fee to be paid. Don’t let him try and tell you otherwise. Communication is available and they do not need a satellite. He wants your money dear. Get rid of him and fast.

  8. WOMEN! Do you not read the posts put on this site?? Some of you just don’t pay attention! IF HE ASKED YOU TO BUY HIM ANYTHING OR ASKS FOR MONEY IT IS A SCAM!! END OF STORY! Their EVERY NEED is taken care of by the military!!! WAKE UP LADIES! I my view if you are even WRITING to this site then there have been red flags that you are noticing!!! HELLO!!!!!!

  9. Hi,
I am speaking to a US Major over the net and he has told me he wants to come to Australia to meet me and in order for him to do so I need to send a request to someone in command over there in Kabul. Is this the way it usually works? I wouldn’t have thought I had to have anything to do with it. He has also asked me for a satellite phone so we can talk when he is out on the field for a few weeks at a time but I told him I wasn’t getting him one.

  10. I was contacted by two of these fraud soldiers. Ones name was Johnson Edwards and the other one was John Kelvin. I was looking on one of the site on Facebook,(I think), cause i can’t find it anymore, but every picture that they had sent me was on that site and they were using real millitary pictures of real men in the millitary. It made me feel sick, that as much as the USA does for them people over there that they have the gaul to do this to the USA women. I ended up looking into it, and the John Kelvin had 5 to 6 facebook accounts in different names with the same millitary picture for their profile. I wish that we could catch these theifs and give them some good USA ass kicking.

  11. MSG Robert McLaughlin says

Elizabeth that email address ends in .com so ask for the .mil address!

Araceli, you ask would a real soldier do that… yes they have and they get in so much trouble! When I was deployed a guy had like 10 girlfriends on the hook like that, sending him money and stuff. He was real. Then one day on base family of those deployed were invited for a gathering. Two of his girlfriends met up and showed the same picture of the same guy! That made the base newspaper and then more women came out. Then that fact made the local Tampa newspaper where even more women came out. The guy was told to pay back all the money and then kicked out. So yes, there are scammers on active duty.

The catch is, DO NOT SEND MONEY! Really, we don’t need it. The military feeds us and houses us, and if we get in trouble with our debts they will garnish our pay so those who are owed get paid.

No one says “send me money I am on a secret mission.” That’s just a scam. If it is secret, why tell you at all? It’s just to try to get you curious and thinking you are deep into something. Go watch “True Lies” and you will see what I mean.

  12. Elizabeth says

I believe another scammer just contacted me, name is Davis Lang. email is langdavewd@yahoo.com,claims he is from Gig Harbor WA, could not verify and when I trace his telephone is comes up not valid. I think I remember someone listing that name as a scammer also a Gary Johnson, Cleveland OH. Can you verifiy if they are both scammers. They only just contacted me but something seems off.

  13. araceli serrano says

    To MSG Robert McLaughlin:
Hi, It’s Araceli again. I have one last thing on my mind that I would really want to ask. Would TRUE soldiers have the capacity or guts to scam women on line dating? Will they ever do such thing?

  14. araceli serrano says

To MSG Robert McLaughlin and to Margaret Rodgers:
I just want to say THANK YOU for taking time to give an advise. I think I just really needed to be convinced that I actually met a scammer on line. I had doubts when he started mentioning money BUT for some reason I needed to be convinced. So scammers actually has hacked Facebook as well coz that’s were he found me. I need to check my privacy settings I guess. Once again THANK YOU so much. It has not caused me anything. Thanks God You guys are there to give advise. Please never stop doing what you are doing. God Speed.

  15. Margaret Rodgers says

FOR EVERYONE: PLEASE UNDERSTAND THAT MANY OF THESE SCAMMERS ARE INVOLVED IN A WORLD WIDE SCAMMING SYNDICATE. THEY ARE CRIMINALS, NOT LOVERS, AND THEY TURN ALL OR MOST OF THE MONEY YOU SEND, WHICH IS PICKED UP BY WHAT THEY CALL A RUNNER, AND IT IS TURNED OVER TO TERRORISTS. I HAVE SPENT TWO YEARS STUDYING AND GATHERING INFORMATION ABOUT THESE PEOPLE THEY ARE AS COLD AS A BLOCK OF ICE.

  16. Margaret Rodgers says

TO Araceli Seranno: Can’t you see he is trying every way he can to get money from you ??? I got a lot of the same requests two years ago from a scammer. I learned the hard way. I did not know about this site and loss a lot. You know this site, you see what we’re telling you but your not listening. He is absolutely a scammer. Why you want to assist him so he can fraud another woman?. This is just a job to him. He does NOT love you or care, trust me I know.

  17. MSG Robert McLaughlin says

Araceli, do not believe it for a minute! You can google US MILITARY PAY and find the real numbers all day long. When deployed we get the base pay, and hazardous duty pay, family separation pay, and so on. No one will make $146k a month. maybe in a year if high ranking enough.

As far as freezing accounts, how often does that happen to you? It is rare. But if I have issues with my bank I can email them just as easy as email you, so the scammer needs no help from you. Would YOU trust a total stranger with ANY of your personal information? Where ever you found the guy, AVOID that place!

  18. araceli serrano says

HI. It’s Araceli again. I have my doubts when he first asked for £500 help for his son who lives in Kansas with his sister coz apparently his son didn’t get the money for his upkeep. Coz I didn’t send a single penny, he then turned and said that he was testing me. Secondly, he said we had to pay $2600 for his replacement fee. I didn’t give so he said he will do something about it so he can take leave and see me here in the U.K. thirdly, he asked recently for £300 to pay for his internet connection….at first he seem real. HOW TRUE IS IT THAT AMERICAN SOLDIERS IN AFGANISTAN ARE PAID $146,000 per month and their accounts are frozen while deployed hence the shortage with money on hand??? please let me know soon.Thank you very much for all advise.

  19. MSG Robert McLaughlin says

Araceli, we do not pay for leave at all.

Rose, they all want you to buy them expensive phones and stuff that they either resell or use for more frauds. SEND NOTHING.

Sally, all scammers. Generals do not hang out on Skype. And I bet NONE of them are on video for “security reasons” right? Fake.

  20. Margaret Rodgers says

To Sally Samaroo: Skype cam’s can be faked. It happened to me twice. If your being bombarded by “Generals” on Skype where did they get your Skype ID ? I would bet they are scammers. The one your questioning, ask him for his dot mil email id. If he won’t give you one, he is fake.and if he does it MUST end in dot Mil.

  21. Margaret Rodgers says

To Rose: I believe the servicemen have access to communication. You are being scammed.

  22. Margaret Rodgers says

TO ARACRLI SERRAMO – Our servicemen never pay for a replacement for leave. Leave is granted by request and is determined by the amount of time they have accrued. They never pay money for this. You have a scammer.

  23. araceli serrano says

How true that US soldiers in Afganistan has to pay for their internet connections or pay for a replacement for them to be able to get a leave?
