Internet Dating Scam: Fake Soldiers

I just came across a post on “A Soldier’s Perspective” discussing a rather disgusting and disturbing trend that has guys posing as soldiers on Internet dating sites. Here’s the quote from CJ’s:

The latest trend involves trolling internet dating sites and convincing women that they are honorable Soldiers who have fallen in love and would do anything to communicate with the object of their affection. But, because they are deployed to Afghanistan or Iraq, they need you to sign up for an expensive telecommunications service like “Military TELEX” in order to make that happen. They profess unending love as their motivator and, unfortunately, many women have fallen for it.

The BIG red flag here is that the guy is asking for money. NEVER fall for that con.

If you come across anyone on a dating site who is asking you for money, regardless of the reason; block them immediately from further contact and then report them to the internet dating service.

You can also check out who is really behind their email address…

AND / or their telephone number…

To read specific details about about one incident, read CJ’s post “The New Military Dating Scam”.

To: Sandi Pattison: I had to chuckle at that one, yes he is really trying hard to convince you. However, that email ID is not legit Military ID either. It must end in .Mil and nothing else.

  2. Grammer is a BIG thing to pay attention to. As I said in a previous post…the verbage is something to watch for. The scammer uses words and spells things differently. And please ladies…NEVER SEND MONEY! There is NOTHING that they should need money for! It’s the military for goodness sake! Everything is taken care of for these guys! I talked to my “military man” for 3 months and I am so sad and miss his BUT I have to keep reminding myself…IT WAS NOT REAL! The man in the photos was NOT REAL!

  3. Add Desmond B. Cross as a scammer. He is posing as soldier in Kabul. His story: His fiance was killed in an auto mobile accident four years ago and father died in the 9/11 disaster. Loves me but never met me. Has six facebook accounts, has terrible grammar for someone who supposedly went to West Point Academy!

This is a new one..I haven’t come across before this guy sent me a marriage proposal..he used this email address:

    army.miltopservice.com@mail.com

  5. How can smart people get fooled so easily? Psychologists blame what they call the “halo effect.” It’s what happens when we notice something we like about a person—often it’s physical beauty—and then start imagining other positive qualities. It’s the reason good-looking people often are paid more than average-looking people, and it happens all the time in online dating. We see an attractive person, or read an interesting profile, and soon we are projecting onto that person who we are looking for, letting our guard down, ignoring red flags. Online scammers love the halo effect.

Amazing page about the Halo effect on scams victims…

Marivic:::> according to the site spokeo.com
this email address is invalid >> cmdhumphrey12@gmail .comhttp://www.spokeo.com/

Dedra::::> first rule use your intelligence over your heart. TOO good to be true, fairy tales are amazing on the big screen, but in real life it never happens, honest and decente people are hard to find.

    For further informations I suggest
    http://www.romancescam.com/album/
    http://www.romancescam.com/forum/portal.php

Locate the real IP on the email message properties the address appears near the end of the message as received from: …
    http://whatismyipaddress.com/ip-lookup

Also on OTHER Internet Browsers :::::> click on the photo of your scammer click on the right button at your mouse then it will appear among other options use Search This Image With Google and You will be redirected to the real owner of the pics OR similar but usually I can find the scammers.

So block them, apply email filters, remove them from your contact list, save the message logs, create a new email I know it brings lots of problems I know! Don’t be fooled, I know it is difficult to be alone, surrounded by Family and friends but for sure You don’t need to get involved in problems, all around the globe there are people losing lots of Money and full of suicidals because they lost Money, their senses, and when feelings are involved we usually don’t follow the proper steps.

Educated people cannot fall into scammers traps…

  7. Margaret Rodgers says

TO Marivic: As I posted before there is no fee for Leaves. Please read some of the posts I put up previously. His Commander would not have an email ID ending in .com. They all end in .Mil I do believe.

  8. Margaret Rodgers says

TO Lori: Yes, he just had not gotten around to it yet.

  9. Margaret Rodgers says

TO mpm: No need to receive anything regarding an inheritance. THIS IS ANOTHER APPROACH TO A SCAM. Be carefull with the last name WITT. He also uses Christian, and Christopher. Civilians NEVER pay for Military leaves and neither does the soldier. There is no fee for this. They earn time on the books and just request it from their CO. You have summed them up perfectly. No feelings, just cold hearted scumbags and will take from you until you are dead and can give no more.

  10. Margaret Rodgers says

TO Sandi Pattison: No…..has to end in .Mil. Not .com as I understood from MSG Robert McLaughiin. Pay close attention to his posts.

  11. MSG Robert Mclaughlin says

A .mil address ends in .mil not .com or anything else. Even milmilmil.com does not end in .mil, see?

  13. sandy pattison says

Thanks Margaret..Would this be a official .mil address:

    Militarymail@usa.com

A sergeant ronaldtriling gave me this one as his .mil just would like to know if it’s legit. Many thanks..sandi

  14. I was apoproached by a Joe Cannon asking to be the receiver of an inheritance in London. I have also been approached by a Captain Mike Witt stationed in Afganistan. Had long email coinversations over a few months time before he started to ask for money and that I had to ask that he be granted leave since he was in Afganistan. These men have no conscience & their only interest is to bleed you dry & take your dignity away.

  15. MSG Robert McLaughlin says

Special Ops and cannot give out APO address? FAKE! Hey I was special ops for over 20 years, there is nothing secret about our email or APO addresses.

  16. To Margaret Rodgers: When I confronted my scammer he actually asked me “What did I take from you?” I replied “Nothing yet but that was next to come, right?” But he never threatened me. Such a shame… Jackass! All I can hope for is…KARMA!

  17. hi i just want to as about this guy named sergeant fred hernandez he was assigned in libya right now and he is asking me to pay his leave and he gave me a his commander email:cmdhumphrey12@gmail .com could you please give me a confirmation about this guys as soon as posible thanks

  18. Margaret Rodgers says

TO DEDRA: No one needs anyone to speak on their behalf to receive an inheritance. This leads to another scam tactic. They have many methods and ways to scam you. He most likely is looking for all your personal information.

  19. Margaret Rodgers says

TO Rebecca and Others: Don’t make friends on Facebook with people you do not know. They do this to get access to your friends LIST so they can get new victims.

  20. Has any one heard of a Sargeant Victor Herrington. He’s friending from Face Book and other on line chat groups. Is stationed in Tripoli Libya ?

  21. Margaret Rodgers says

TO Everyone: Two yrs ago on Jan.1, 2011 a scammer posted a name “Walter Bruston” and a picture of a soldier to my Facebook page and requested friendship. I lost $6000 and received a broken heart. To say the least, I was very naive. I made it my business to learn all I could about scammers, who they were and are, and how they operate.I just wanted everyone to know that after searching diligently for two years I found the true identity of the soldier just a few days ago. Out of respect for the family I won’t post his name but I found him on “Faces of the Fallen”. He died May 3, 2007, in combat in Baghdad, Iraq , a War Hero. I will never forget his face. God bless him and may he rest in peace with our Lord.

  22. Margaret Rodgers says

To Lisa: Sorry, I did post a warning awhile back that a new approach was asking for bank accounts to be opened and also accept money or goods from them. Don’t oblige.

  23. Margaret Rodgers says

To Ann: Leaves are not paid for. The Military earn leave. It’s time on their books.

  24. Margaret Rodgers says

To Heather: There is a scammer that uses the name “Chris”. He sometimes uses “Christian”, and or “Christopher”. He uses the last names of “Walsh”, and “Witt”. They will try and stick to the subject of money if they can. That’s why their with you. He says he does not care for money but that is all he speaks of – interesting, isn’t it ? They many times do not answer emails because you can get the ip number and trace them. Some don’t think you know this and will make the mistake of emailing. I love it when they do that.

  25. Margaret Rodgers says

to Sandy Pattison: No troops I heard of went to Nigeria. It is .mil and I can’t answer your question on the plane ticket to another country. Maybe MSG Robert McLaughlin could answer that one.
