Internet Dating Scam: Fake Soldiers

I just came across a post on “A Soldier’s Perspective” discussing a rather disgusting and disturbing trend that has guys posing as soldiers on Internet dating sites. Here’s the quote from CJ’s:

The latest trend involves trolling internet dating sites and convincing women that they are honorable Soldiers who have fallen in love and would do anything to communicate with the object of their affection. But, because they are deployed to Afghanistan or Iraq, they need you to sign up for an expensive telecommunications service like “Military TELEX” in order to make that happen. They profess unending love as their motivator and, unfortunately, many women have fallen for it.

The BIG red flag here is that the guy is asking for money. NEVER fall for that con.

If you come across anyone on a dating site who is asking you for money, regardless of the reason; block them immediately from further contact and then report them to the internet dating service.

You can also check out who is really behind their email address…

AND / or their telephone number…

To read specific details about about one incident, read CJ’s post “The New Military Dating Scam”.

  1. Jack_Pierce80@yahoo.com DID IT AGAIN!!!! Never asked for $- however would never give address for me to send a package. “WEIRD” Called every other day-which is creepy part. Changed # & blocked everything from him. Wondering if others who have called him out ever felt threatened or just the sick feeling in your stomach knowing you shared so many intimate stories with him? Any idea who he really is or the poor guy in the photos???

  2. O.K. I’m a beleiver, I lost 500, well they are getting slicker, now asking, for you to open up a bank account, I did with Chase they offer a great program, request money from them and the scammer just can’t do it, surprise. Mine also tried to tell me, he didn’t know his account number with USAA, All military know that number, so if you run into slimyjeff@yahoo.com beware, My eyes have been opened.

  3. Hello,
I have been corresponding with a man in the military for a couple of weeks. His name is Roland Kellogg Edwards and he says he is a staff sergeant in Iraq. He is going to retire soon and we are going to meet. He originally contacted me on OkCupid. He hasn’t asked for anything yet but after reading these posts on here I am worried that I am being duped.

  4. Hey I have been contacted this time from a soldier named Thomas Witt . Ladies do we all look lonely ? This had become a game to me . I play along just to see what these scammers are asking for. I have in the last 6 months had 14 of these make believe guys pop up and each I have reported to the web sites and the authorities. Really do we Americans look that stupid?

  5. Has anyone come into contact with a Lt Col. named Sean Sanders? He is communicating with a friend of mine that he met on Match.com. He is asking her for money.

  6. There’s also one calling himself warrant officer Mcdonald White,widowed,7 yr old daughter named Lizzie living in Australia with his sister, phone number of alleged brother 413-398-2617,brother allegedly named Malcolm.Needs money for leave request so he doesn’t have to go to Libya from Afghanistan.Says he was born in Ft worth raised in Dallas.I busted him out and he blocked me on FB so I scammed the scammer and now he is sending messages to me on a different fb from a mobile and a computer.asked for a letter to be sent to his Col for a leave request with 750.00.Col.david24@yahoo.com..What an idiot.I wish some of these guys would get caught. Our beloved Military has enough to worry about without stolen identities, not to mention the lonely people who are gullible enough to believe this garbage..

    Kimberley,
Ask him in what county he got divorced. You can look up the divorce records online. Ask where his son was born. Also a pubic record. You can check property tax records online in most places too to see who owns any address. Check out the house. Ask him for his MOS, where he went to Basic and AIT, and what’s his rank.

No one leaves Afghanistan for Libya. Who leaves a kid with a non-relative? Let me guess, his parents are dead. Uh-huh. Verify that too. Oh, have him write from his .mil account too. Anything ending in .com, .org, .net or other CIVILIAN address is to be questioned.

Sounds about 99.8% fake to me.

  10. Robert, thanks for answering, we appreciate it!
Heres the information on the scam that involved me….
The name he used is Martin Weber, he had photos of a tall blond soldier, and a photo with a young boy and an older man, he is in the Army, deployed to Kabul, Afghanistan, he is retiring in Feb, his has a 14year old son living here in the states with a disabled veteran named Henry and Lisa Garshong in Massachusetts. He is divorced, since 2007, though he stated that the mother of his son left when he was very young. His house in the US is in Clearwater, Florida, the address that he gave and told me look at via google earth was 1666 Fortune Dr. He just went on a mission to Libya and had pictures to prove it. The email was Larkspur1968@hotmail.com. He said he grew up in August, Ga, went to Augusta State University and Augusta Military College.

  11. Natalie….about your sister in law….thats exactly along the lines of what the guy was telling me. He said his name was Martin Weber. Also that he was in the Army stationed in Afghanistan, his 14yr old son lives here in the US with disabled veteran and his wife. He sent photos of a soldier and even sent me a plant for my birthday. We meet on a Christian website so I gave him the benefit of the doubt. He gave me a lot of information about himself, never asked much about me and then he gets all serious and proposes! I tried to verify some of the information he had given me(home address here in states showed a foreign persons name with it) ,and none of it checked out. The friend, taking care of his son, emailed me and said that the son is very excited to meet me and he would like a laptop computer for his birthday. I was shocked and said I was in no position to do that. Whenever I questioned Martin about little things like this he would get angry and say why didnt I trust him or he would change the subject. Also, I noticed that the way he talked in emails made me think of a person who knows english as a second language. Terms, phrases, tense were all a little off. I checked the IP address where the emails to me were coming from and was after checking them all on a website that has IP addresses that are known to be involved in scams, I found 2 times he sent me emails from a computer address that had been involved in scams. Its sounds like your sis is being scammed, sorry, but have her read more on the internet scam profiles….my guy fit it exactly!

  12. MSG Robert McLaughlin says

Kimberly – Post his info HERE for others to see.

Janet, Angela – His email does not end in .mil so it is fake.

Natalie – This appears top be the classic scam and it keeps working.

Sandra – Military email addresses are like regular ones. He gave you a fake address. Run away.

  13. I was just involved in a online dating relationship with a man impersonating
someone in the Army. I was suspicious after a few emails for various reasons, he has not asked for money, although I am sure that would eventually come up. He
sent pictures online, and got very serious, intense quickly….there were so many red flags it was like a parade!!! I am wondering if I should report the email address, photos or information to anyone. He pulled his profile on the dating website so I cant flag it there at all. Thanks for any input or comments. I cant believe I have fell for it at all, let alone for weeks of emailing!

  14. I have been scammed by a Mark Douglass from nigeria and asking for money and reckons hes in love with me and wants to marry me. Now I am aware of these scams!!!

  15. To Angela,

I got an email from Angela Morgans. It’s a fwd of a poem to her from sgt.johnprieve@rocketmail.com
Is this from you or him?

Also, just 15 min ago I received a yahoo Mssgr message from johnangelaprieve that says: Angela love you

Can someone help? Who is who and what is going on? I did not respond to either message.

  16. To Angela

Are you really messaging me on Yahoo or am I being scammed yet again??
I’ve been getting chats from an Angela Meyer

  17. Hi, my sister-in-law has been corresponding with someone who goes by the name of Larry Graves who claims he’s in the military was deployed in Afghanistan and has 15 yr. old daughter named Rose who lives in Ghana with a nanny. He was sent my sister-in-law money to deposit into bank accounts here in U.S. He says he wants to marry her and was supposed to come to U.S. 2 weeks ago and settle here with his daughter. Two weeks have gone by and he told her he was in a car accident and were hospitalized. We have told my sister-in-law that this is a scam but she won’t listen to anyone in the family.
She believes that he will come to be with her and considers herself in love. Does this story sound familiar?

    G

  18. Hi…maybe you can helo me. I was contacted by a man called himself Sgt. Fritz Sauter on iLOve. The first four weeks were really nice talking. He said he was stationed in Kabul and within these 4 weeks he went to London for a deployment that lasted a week. He gave me a phone number and we phoned each other day by day. Now he is in Nigeria, Abuja. Said he has to stay at the embassy and teach some nigerian soldiers the use of weapons and gadgets. He told me a sad life story, being widowed and that he has a child 5 years old living with his sister in law. This sister in law wrote emails to me either. Moreover he told me he had a gold business in South Africa and afetr a deal did not work out he asked me for money to book a flight down to Germany to meet me. I did not sent any money and i would not whatever he is going to tell me!!!! He ist still in contact with me , apologized for asking money and tells me he will go home to NY and if it is possible i should come and meet him there. He gave me hir military adress it is fritzsauter@us.army.mil.
He contacted me with his yahoo adress and told me that i cannot write to his military adress because it weill automaticalle bounce back as it is made to detect unknown mails.
Can anyone help me? Is this a scam? I thouht so but some things are different from the scams i read about.

  19. Ladies please pay attention!

Sgt John Prieve just changed his name on Badoo!!

He is now listed as Patrick John!
    Beware

  20. Ada!

    Do not send the money!!
If you are anything like the rest of us, we work too hard for our money to hand it over to these low lives impersonating our military men, while they sit back and enjoy their joke in lovely Sunnyvale, CA.

  21. Is his commander still Sylvestre Orumah Jones? Or has he made up a new name?

  22. Ladies –

Sgt John Prieve now changed his Yahoo Mssgr photo from the woman in white to a military photo by a truck in the blue beret. He still has my photo on his Badoo site and I’ve had enough of him thinking nothing of making so many women fall in love with him, and he stops at nothing! Just because we find out he’s a scammer doesn’t make the sudden loss hurt any less. He would chat for 12 hrs straight with me on weekends when I didn’t have to work and would blow up my IM wondering how long til I would be out of work and be able to chat. I felt empty when I figured out what he was doing and I’m afraid to trust any guy online now, which isn’t fair if there are some looking for what we are. It took a lot for me to even consider online dating after all I’ve been thru and how dare he take that willingness to take a chance again away from us!

  23. I get contacted at least 3 times a week from men claiming to be military. They are all on tagged. I just read there email and laugh.

I must look really lonely to them but I’m not that lonely.

  24. sgt john prieve asked me to marry him he begged me not to leave him his commander asked for 1620 pounds for john to come home

  25. i was al so talking to sgt john prieve he wanted to marry me to he mailed me on monday saying he really loves me and wanted to come home to me his commander asked for 1620 pounds for john to come home i said no
