I just came across a post on “A Soldier’s Perspective” discussing a rather disgusting and disturbing trend that has guys posing as soldiers on Internet dating sites. Here’s the quote from CJ’s:
The latest trend involves trolling internet dating sites and convincing women that they are honorable Soldiers who have fallen in love and would do anything to communicate with the object of their affection. But, because they are deployed to Afghanistan or Iraq, they need you to sign up for an expensive telecommunications service like “Military TELEX” in order to make that happen. They profess unending love as their motivator and, unfortunately, many women have fallen for it.
The BIG red flag here is that the guy is asking for money. NEVER fall for that con.
If you come across anyone on a dating site who is asking you for money, regardless of the reason; block them immediately from further contact and then report them to the internet dating service.

hi my sister has been talking to a us marine in afghan after a couple of days he declared his love for her then he started saying he wanted to come out of the marines and could she send him money and email his general to get him leave so far it has cost 700 pounds and now they want a further 1200 my sister is a single mum and doesnt have this sort of money she is trying to sell things and borrow it as much as i would love to see her happy i just cant help thinking this is a scam does anyone know if you can buy leave for a marine
For Everyone – I am reporting a scammer using email ID of Ben_Cole30@yahoo.com. He first told me he was a soldier in Afghanistan. A couple days ago, i was contacted by Netlog, a dating site, saying he wanted to be friends with me on there. He had posted a picture of a white male, different than the soldier, and listed his residence as Lagos. Conflicting information, indeed.
To Nina – I would love to attach a picture of the ones who have contacted me but do not see a way to do so here. I have many. You must remember however these are pictures they have stolen and are only using, just like the names.
TO Ron B – If you are getting an ip listed to California and it says Sunnyvale, that is the ip number belonging to Yahoo Corporate Office. The scammers ip number is the last one listed at the bottom of all the header information. It says, ” Received from”, and is usually about an inch and a half up from the bottom.

I would suggest you seek out to find out if you are actually legally married because I have a feeling you are not. I would betThis was a scammer and I would bet there never was a real lawyer either. You need some advice from a legitimate source and show them whatever paper work you have and don’t send another penny.

I got scammed about 2 & 1/2 years ago and find it amazing that women continue to be duped by these dating site trollers from Nigeria and who knows from where else. I was badly bruised for awhile but I am so happy my due diligence including this page helped me realize the truth. It’s funny now but they are so lazy they go to other sites to get their “love letters”. I followed the advice of someone who said concentrate your energy for projects like Adopt a Soldier. I ended up adopting a whole squadron in a manner of speaking as they need freezer pops right now with the temperature so hot. These are combat troops on the front line in Afghanistan and I get a lot of satisfaction knowing that what I send makes a little change of pace for them, men & women alike. I’ve sent the pops but I throw in a regular care package now & then cuz they are fun to do. As the woman said earlier, it’s not a pen pal situation. I have received 2 short notes from the Captain who I am sure is the age of my son or there about. The USPS cuts the USArmy a deal and for $13.45 you can send up to 70#s. It would have to be lead or granite (we’re the granite capital of the USA here). The best I have been able to do is 20# of pops. I send some magazines and the local paper, even the Sr. paper I am editor of. They are touched by the attention of strangers and the effort and choices that we send on to them. TP to tuna to dental floss to beef jerky to chocolate (they have access to refrigeration and I am told they will scrape it off of wrappers). I always send a letter with the news of the week; boring I’m sure to whoever reads it but a connection to the States anyway. So man up, get a life and move on.
TO MOONSKIN – I DEFINITELY WOULD TURN THE THREAT OVER TO YOUR LOCAL POLICE AND REPORT TO THE FBI. MOST LIKELY HE IS TRYING TO INTIMIDATE YOU AND SCARE YOU AS REVENGE. ALWAYS TAKE THREATS SERIOUSLY, HOWEVER, IF HE ONLY HAS YOUR NAME AND NO OTHER INFORMATION ON YOU HE PROBABLY CANNOT MAKE HIS THREATS REAL. STILL, TAKE IT SERIOUS AND REPORT TO YOUR LOCAL AUTHORITIES AND HEED THEIR ADVICE.
TO ANGIE – I AM NOT SURE OF THIS BUT I BELIEVE THE US CUSTOMS IS LOCATED IN NEW YORK. PACKAGES COMING IN FROM ABROAD OR LEAVING TO GO ABROAD I BELIEVE GO THROUGH THERE. AND WHY IF LOCATED IN CALIFORNIA WOULD YOU SEND MONEY TO CHARLESTON ?? DOESN’T MAKE SENSE. YOU WERE SMART TO SAY NO. I BELIEVE THEY WORK WITH ACCOMPLISES THEREFORE EXPLAINING WHY WE GET TWO DIFFERENT LOCATIONS ON THE IP NUMBERS. To J Gunn, Aaron Ramos is a scammer. I talked to him a couple of years ago. To the lady with the scammer who got paid in gold. Please run. He is a scammer. Our soldiers don’t need anyone to pay for them to come home.
My brother just returned from Afghanistan. I know my sil didn’t pay for him to come home.
Also please note most of the names are common in sound. They are common first names used as last name. never smith, jones etc.
I spent a whirlwind 20 day online chat/email with a Mills Cartier, memills64@yahoo.com. He seemed to good to be true, supposedly U.S. Navy Officer. Very handsome man in the 3 pics he gave. Met him on okcupid.com, he left the dating site nearly immediately after we began chatting. On day 20, he asked me for money to help get jewels/diamonds out of customs in California, to avoid late penalities. He gave me an email with Synovus Bank in South Carolina to send the money, North Charleston. I said no. He gave 2 different birthdays. When I looked up the headers of the emails, the ones romancing me were from Accra, Ghana, Africa. The email that asked me for the money was from Amsterdam, Netherlands.
Beware ladies.

it has been said before, ask them for .mil e mail address, none of them have one.
