Internet Dating Scam: Fake Soldiers

I just came across a post on “A Soldier’s Perspective” discussing a rather disgusting and disturbing trend that has guys posing as soldiers on Internet dating sites. Here’s the quote from CJ’s:

The latest trend involves trolling internet dating sites and convincing women that they are honorable Soldiers who have fallen in love and would do anything to communicate with the object of their affection. But, because they are deployed to Afghanistan or Iraq, they need you to sign up for an expensive telecommunications service like “Military TELEX” in order to make that happen. They profess unending love as their motivator and, unfortunately, many women have fallen for it.

The BIG red flag here is that the guy is asking for money. NEVER fall for that con.

If you come across anyone on a dating site who is asking you for money, regardless of the reason; block them immediately from further contact and then report them to the internet dating service.

You can also check out who is really behind their email address…

AND / or their telephone number…

To read specific details about about one incident, read CJ’s post “The New Military Dating Scam”.

They fall in love at the drop of a hat , duh must think we are dumb, anyway all no parents , no siblings , same crap all the time , i love catching them , they must know me by now lol lol but they keep coming back suckers , !!!!! I will keep catching them cos they will get nothing from me ever except abuse . Would love to meet the real thing talking to one now first thing i said was IF YOU EVER ASK ME FOR MONEY YOU WILL FIND YOURSELF DELETED and he was shocked also put on mess status I HATE SCAMMERS and make sure they see it ,he did and is still there so maybe he s for real but won’t hold my breath watch this space . Other ones saw the status and were gone just like that so put it on your status and make it clear from the start you won’t take their shit !!!!! good luck

  2. To sandra pattison thanks very much for your comment. I think I have been scammed as well just recently . I looked up the yahoo address I was given and it said Sunnyvale USA as well. The person contacting me is going by the surname Cox as well and says he has a son as well. He has tried to get some ,money from me. He chats to me at the moment but I am playing him at his own game now. If you got photos of this Person going by Cox can you send them to me on Suzs123@hotmail.com. I have got somebody to report this as I want the real Captain Cox to be aware of whats happened . I have some photos of this Captain Cox as well and want to see if they match him . One is of him in uniform with his name badge. Thanks

Hi Everyone Again: I want to say i have some approaching me with a new profile. They are on Netlog and Badoo. They claim to be business men, divorced or widowed. Are looking for serious relationship with marriage in mind. Tell you how much they love you already. Tell you all the things you want to hear. In a few weeks, ask you for assistance in some financial endeavor they’re involved in. They are some elaborate schemes they have approached me with. Usually with they’re ending up with my bank account number !! haha. Names are Christian Walsh; John Galvan; Collins White. So be careful of the ordinary looking civilian posing as a business man ! Their scammers.

Hi Everyone: Have some new names to report ; Posed as soldier : Steve Edward Jerry. Said he was a Sgt. E7 in Kabul. Sent me two forms , one to sign only and return to him. Already knew forms phony. Confronted him and busted him. He confessed was Nigerian and out of work. He was on Netlog.

Then Captain Matthew Miley. He requested $250 to help with an extended 5 mo leave from Kabul. He sent one form somewhat different which had places to be filled in but was blank. He asked me to complete the form, sign, and return. I asked for a pic with him holding a sign saying hello to me, and for him to email me from his military email address. He says “my what” ? I said i would have to verify the form was real and he say “whatever”. I said he was fake, and he replied only saying “stupid” to me. I was laughing by this time.

    Hi Vixx,

There is no Colbert Clary in the military. What an odd name. I am seeing a trend like that. There are a couple Shane Garrisons but neither are Captains. We’d not mistake our military rank, ever. Ask them for their .mil address, ymail and yahoo are completely worthless.

A proxy let’s you look like you are connected to the Internet from a different location. Imagine if you can an extension cord to the neighbor next door, it’s look like you lived there. Kind of the same thing.

    Hi Judy,

There is no Larry Haggard in the Army. Nor Bill or William. If he insists he is real them he can easily send an email to you from his .mil account. If he says it is locked out or any other rubbish, tell him no one wants to hear the lies. Then spread his emails far and wide for everyone to see.

    All,

See the picture at the top of the page, the picture of the lady kissing the soldier? He is an actor! How do I know? Because his sideburns come down past the half way point on his ear. he is out of uniform! I swear I can spot these guys without even trying.

  9. i’ve been chatting with a soldier by the name of Weiss Hannett. He says his a capt. in the us army and has been in the military for 31 yrs. he’s divorced and has 1 son age 9. His grammer is poor..and also has told me how much he loves me and how he is looking forward to meeting me. He is a smooth talker.. he’s never asked me for money . he did share some pics of him and also got on web-cam… that is when i noticed the difference of how he looked. he would say that it was the web-cam..anyways, i started asking him more personal questions and have not heard from him for two days. he also shared a pic and video of his “son” which did not have no resemblence. i do have two pics of him.. I’ve googled him and looked up the iinformation that he’s given me to see if he’s been telling me the truth, but so far this person does not exsist… he is no where to be found with the information that he has given me.

  10. now i am more confused as i have been told that sunnyvale use in the proxy something??. i am so shocking when it comes to computers…xx

  11. oh i checked the ip address, both from sunnyvale usa… thanks for this page and reading everyone’s advice made me think twice and i thought i would check them out… so thankful i did..x

  12. here are a couple more saying they are in afghanistan, not one on them has asked for money, but i have had the i love you.. we have only just started chatting the last couple of days.. one is cobert clary sgt.cobertclary@yahoo.com and the other is shane garrison …captshanegarrison@ymail.com …. i met them on a site called metrodate… x

  13. hey how can i find an ip address…. if someone could help… many thanks..xx

  14. To MSG Robert Mclaughlin:
You have been so helpful to the other ladies on this site, that I am hoping you can help me out also. Larry is insisting that he has not done any of the things that it shows he has (found his picture on wall of shame site as Bill Haggard) but says someone must have been using his pictures. I would really love to believe him, but after everything I have read it’s very hard to do. So far I have not seen his name as Larry Haggard on any of the sites and hope you can look him up for me. He states he is Larry Haggard, birthday Sept 20th and is a E-6 staff sargeant stationed in Bagdad, was in gulf war as well as in Iraq a couple of times, this should be his last. If there is anything you can verify? I would so love to believe him, but am now so hesitant so anything you can or can not find would go a long way toward helping my peace of mind. Thank you so very much. I have found your information very helpful and have already encountered 2 other scammers and was able to put them off very quickly. Bless you and thank you for being such a nice guy.
    Judy

  15. Warning Ladies: Bill Haggard is now going by Larry Haggard aka handy.larry@yahoo.com

  16. I think that I am in the same situation as everyone else here although he has not asked me for any money. Has anyone heard of Larry Haggard – supposed to be E6 staff sargeant stationed in Bagdad. Can anyone verify if he does exhist?

TO ALL; Here are some names i found to be scammers that contacted me in the last month;: From Badoo dating site: David Woods ;Michael Clancy Michael Donovan and Robert Hume. Stanley Jeffrey with email Ken/Jeff65 and Christian Walsh. From Shtyle dating site: Sgt. Matthew Miley. All these men asked for money and for all different kinds of reasons . Each one was crazy in love with me immediately and wanting marriage. They were either in the military in Afghanistan or they were a contractor of some sort and all were in and around Nigeria. Stanley Jeffrey called me and supposedly put his 13 year old son on the line and i heard a deep voice of an adult male. No way could that have been a 13 year old. So stupid all i can do is shake my head. So i am posting these names in case any of these morons come your way.

To Diane: Remember Walterian7? He finally got around to asking me to send money for a phone so we could talk on the phone. I told him no, couldn’t afford it, that chatting on the computer would have to be it. He stopped coming online after that. He said hello just once and that was all in the last six weeks. He was a scammer. I also found him on Netlog , a dating site.

  19. Watch out for Anthony Kirby. He is on the Irish website, Meeting Point, and says he is half irish, half american. He is not. After sending him some money for his thuraya satellite phone, I knew it didnt feel right, so i searched the web and found this site. I have just checked his IP address, thanks to here! and he is in the UK. He did ring, but his accent was Nigerian! So upset, feel so bloody stupid. The photos he sent were of a very good looking soldier. Wish i hadnt sent the money, but at least i know now.

Hi, I was corresponding with a guy called donald gray cox as he called himself I met him on ‘My Space’ he said he was stationed in Iraq, and that he was being deployed to Pakistan in a few months, he said his wife passed away 2 years ago and he had a son ‘phillip’ Although his english and grammar spelling etc..was not that great, i learned to like him and get close to him personally, we had been chatting for around six months, recently he said he needed to come to Australia to meet with me, and needed 600 aud towards his airfare as his sister was loaning him the rest. Something told me to google his name and low and behold, another woman was about to be scammed by him too, until she did the same thing as me by googleing him. He came up under scam watch. I was so angry i questioned him of course he denied everything, although he seemed to be military there was something not quite right about the whole thing..I think i made the right decision in the end to stop communicating with him, he was so smooth and spoke very sincerely about his army life and family life with his son, i fell for it well almost. I have his pictures or the real military guy’s pictures with me, so if anyone out there has been scammed by this man, let me know, as i will send u his pictures, or the ones he sent me. I hope these people are caught and eventually stopped as they play with people’s emotions and feelings just too much, its not just about losing money, its about getting over, the hurt they have caused…Sandra

Hi there Rosalind, nice to meet you. My last posted was messy because I was on my cell phone not my computer. If you like I will include links and tidy it up for you. I can also write something more specific if you wish, such as more detailed dialogue about what solder DO like. It is easier to know what to spot and then figure that everything else is fake. The bad guys will just get sneakier with what they do but they will never be the real thing.

maybe other readers can tell me what they want to know. I am only too happy to help out!

    • Rosalind Gardner says

      Hi Robert,

You wrote that on your cell phone??!! Wow! That’s talent. I can barely make a phone call on mine. 🙂

I’ve already posted your comment / article to the site, but I really like your idea of doing an article about what soldiers DO like. That would be really cool.

You may send it to me via either the comments section on this post or through our contact page. http://101date.com/contact-us/

Look forward to reading it.. as a former air traffic controller who worked with a lot of military personnel, I GET the ‘man in uniform’ attraction. 🙂

      Cheers,
      Rosalind
