Internet Dating Scam: Fake Soldiers

I just came across a post on “A Soldier’s Perspective” discussing a rather disgusting and disturbing trend that has guys posing as soldiers on Internet dating sites. Here’s the quote from CJ’s:

The latest trend involves trolling internet dating sites and convincing women that they are honorable Soldiers who have fallen in love and would do anything to communicate with the object of their affection. But, because they are deployed to Afghanistan or Iraq, they need you to sign up for an expensive telecommunications service like “Military TELEX” in order to make that happen. They profess unending love as their motivator and, unfortunately, many women have fallen for it.

The BIG red flag here is that the guy is asking for money. NEVER fall for that con.

If you come across anyone on a dating site who is asking you for money, regardless of the reason; block them immediately from further contact and then report them to the internet dating service.

You can also check out who is really behind their email address…

AND / or their telephone number…

To read specific details about about one incident, read CJ’s post “The New Military Dating Scam”.

What is the name of this Military soldier? Why dont you post the name. I have been scam before and I may be able to help you. No promises but I know where you can check if his email is genuine or not.

  2. MSG Robert Mclaughlin says

Hi Margaret, and others, I am only too happy for refreshed info for you all.
    1. If he says he is military do not trust. Hotmail or yahoo address. Ask for his email address ending in .mil. All military folks have one. If he has note or won’t give It he is not a soldier. YES there are classified. Email addresses out there but this is completely unclassified and we all have one. If he says it’s secret then demand the other one.

    2. Someone die? Wife, parents, kid, etc? Check the social security death index to verify his claims.

    3. He got divorced? What county? Records of the divorce will be on file and many counties have the information online now.

    4. We earn 2.5 days of leave per month. That’s 30 days a year. If we pay for leave we only pay the plane ticket in the states. So maybe he needs $400 to fly coast to coast. You do not want a man who cannot even afford a plane ticket at that age. We pay no money for leave at all. The form we use is DA31, Google it. Anything else is fake.

    5. If he is under cover or on secret work he would never tell you unless you have a clearance and a need to know what he does. So that is a lie.

    6. Ask for a picture of his CAC card or have him take a picture of himself for you and have him write your name on a piece of paper for the photo. That is very simple to do.

    7. Scammers lure you because they think like women and talk of love and the. future. Scammers who lure men do so with promises if sex. Remember if the person is not acting like the opposite sex it is a scam. Of course long term all couples merge, but not in the first 3 emails.

    8. Ask their name, rank, and social. Not classified and even what you tell the enemy when captured.

    9. I have checked out over 50 claimed soldiers for folks here. Only one was really who he said he was. The odds are that it is fake if you have doubts.

    10. He wants you to show your devotion by sending money, well he can show his by providing information you can verify then.

      Hello Robert,

Rosalind here… the webmaster at 101Date.com

Thank you so much for all your help and great advice on this topic. I have no doubt your efforts alone have kept hundreds from falling victim to these scammers.

Because your information is so useful, I intend to repost your latest comment as an article here on the site. Doing so will give the topic more exposure and make it easier to find than if it is buried in the commentary – which might relieve you of some of your ‘investigative work’. 🙂

  4. Judy Cano says

I think i have a scammer on the line. Have not sent any money. He is asking me to pay for him to come home so we can get married.Yeah right and i just fell off the lettuce truck. Any one been contacted by SPC Patrick Mceneaney
He has said he has a daughter thats 12 and he is a widow, Has been in the service for 28 yrs and right now they can’t access they’re bank accounts or credit cards. Professes his love for me and he never even met me. Wants to get married to me and never even met me. He is begging me to bring him home. If he was here my son would beat the heck out of him. He says he is from Houston Texas then he said sugarland Texas but his facebook says beaumoont Texas. Wow he gets around. He has sent me pictures but can’t really read the name. I can’t find him any where and i have looked all over. So please ladies beware of these jerks.

  5. I should tell you his email is milleroy42@hotmail.com.
He tells some stories that are believable but since I had
my doubts I went back on over40and single to see if he was
back on site. He told me he went off site because he
was chatting with me. So a month goes by and I decide
to see and lo and behold there he is with same
pic but different username and bio!!! Beware ladies

  6. Beware of a man on over40andsingle.com. He is portraying a
Soldier in afghanistan. He goes by Miller Gladstone Roy. In his
first bio he is from Florida, his new one is from Kentucky. He even called
me from Afghanistan so I thought he was genuine. Beware
ladies. He is obviously from there but not who he says!!!

  7. Margaret Rodgers says

    TO ROBERT –
CAN YOU TELL ME AGAIN ABOUT THE RULES FOR MILITARY MEN TAKING LEAVE. THIS GUY SAYS HE IS UNDERCOVER AGENT, LIKE A COP, IN THE MILITARY. SAYS HE CAN TAKE LEAVE BUT CAN’T ASK FOR IT HIMSELF. SAYS FAMILY HAS TO REQUEST LEAVE. I REMEMBER YOU STATING SOME FACTS ON THIS. COULD YOU REFRESH THE RULES AND WHAT IS AND WHAT IS NOT. I RECALL SOMETHING ABOUT LEAVE BEING EARNED AND THAT IS ALL. I FEEL PRETTY CERTAIN HE IS A SCAMMER AS HE ALREADY TRIED TO GET ME TO PAY FOR A PHONE HOOKUP WITH SOME LINK HE TALKED ABOUT AND I TOLD HIM I COULD NOT AFFORD TO DO THAT AND WOULD NOT BE DOING IT. HE ACCEPTED THAT BUT NOW AS OF TODAY IS STARTING TO FEED ME THIS BULL ABOUT HOW TO REQUEST LEAVE FOR HIM. THANKS FOR YOUR HELP AND IMPUT. ALWAYS LIKE TO READ WHAT YOU POST , SO VERY HELPFUL.

  8. A good friend of mine lost a substantial sum of money in the hope of satisfying a lifelong desire of marriage and children.
In this scam the fictional lover was a so-called Sgt Williams Chen who claimed to be serving in Afghanistan. My friend received a pic of Chen in hospital after supposedly being shot in the arm in an ambush on his way back to his base. The requests for money were according to bogus US Military email addresses, made by General Patraeus who I learnt later was the NATO Commander. I am sure he would have more important things to do with his time. It really was so very obviously a big fraud, but sadly my friend’s heart over-ruled her mind.

Sgt Williams Chen, who could be a genuine combatant whose identity was used, claimed that his wife left him 2 years ago with two young boys. After giving my friend his flight details for his arrival to meet her, he failed to show up at the airport. No communication whatsoever. My friend was terribly disappointed. A week or two later he contacted her again and apologised. He said he had a matter to attend to in the uK.

If anyone has any information concerning this scam, please contact me. It is most important as I am not sure that my friend has fully accepted the obvious fact that she has been and maybe still is being scammed.

  9. I found 3 recently on girlsdateforfree.com. A Chad Hendricks, Crawley Brown and the famous Michael Ramos. It is sick and horrible that these frauds are using OUR soldiers for their gain. All I can say is beware and find out everything first.

  10. Another name Sgt Pederson but he changes the name.
hes on facebok as Robert Pederson last night it was Joe I blocked him
In May he asked me for £350 to pay his mortgage on a restaurant. He asked me to be benificiary
A lady on romance scams has had a lot of money taken off her her duughter knows he is a scam
    but she keeps paying out.
    Hes a pretty boy ,

  11. Margaret Rodgers says

Reported David Woods to Badoo. He has been removed from there. The sad thing is he will pop up pretending to be someone else. He was the most abusive one i have come across so far. Started out real nice until I said no to his requests. I hope i can forget the sound of his voice. Ha.

  12. I was “found” by “Captain Tony Martinez”. I talked to him for only 3 days before I was supposed to send his son here in the States $300 for his b-day. I started doing research of my own then. His email is capt_tonymartinez@yahoo.com ladies out there be very careful. He is still trying to get me to talk and believe him. But like your mom always said, “if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.” He said he is a Captain in Iraq. Made up stories about patrol duties and his men getting shot at. A story about being a widower and having a 15 year old son. Just be careful and don’t fall for this one.

  13. Margaret Rodgers says

To All: David Woods first asks for $550 turns around and asks for additional $6000. I said coincidence, I have another scammer asking me for the same amount. He tries to make me feel guilty that I said no. Tells me I am wicked, and then tries to get me to send him my credit card number. I traced his first email to Port Harcourt, Nigeria. He threatened would see me dead when comes to the states, then acted like he was just kidding. Anyone, avoid this name. He is on Badoo, posting a picture of a very nice looking civilian.

  14. Margaret Rodgers says

To All: I reported earlier this week, new contacts I suspected as scammers. David Woods I reported here i suspected, just asked for $550 dollars for his child’s school clothes. He’s stuck on an oil rig off the shore of England and can’t get money to the Nanny – yes thats right to the Nanny. Apparently, the Nanny has no money for school supplies for his daughter. How convenient for him to be able to ask me to supply that for him, This scammer called me the other night on the phone, and i immediately heard an accent. Not sure what kind it was, but the voice did not fit the picture he presented on Badoo, nor of a texan born and raised. I questioned him about the accent, and he replied he had been working for a company based in Holland and also spoke Dutch. So it appears the scammers are beginning to use a new scenario. One this week wanted to send his daughter to live with me, and I said wouldn’t work out and cut him off before he asked if I could pay for the ticket, which i am sure was the next question. Tonight I told him I knew he was a scammer as soon as he opened his mouth on the phone, and I told him to eat shit and die young and deleted him. Have bumped off 9 scammers in the last 4 days.

  15. C Phillips says

Dear All, I nearly got taken for a ride, spent 4 months chatting away to Jason who was in Iraq then it started, my son is really ill he is away in Ghana and needs medical treatment and i cant send him money coz im in Iraq. This went on and on. he was called jason Adams email jsadams2000@live.com
He was so in love with me and i had changed his life and i was the one to rescue him from his sad life. What a prat.

  16. Ryan Kinsella-Harmon says

Please ladies be aware of a guy who calls himself Phils hughes. You can find him on Webdate. Very good looking pics and his emails were fine at first. Says he is a Captain in the Marine corp, his wife died of cancer and his 4 year old girl is living with relatives. He was fine at first and seemed normal, then the emails came about how he needed my help to transfer money to Iraq so he could invest in their oil and they only took Western Union. That his bank manager would not do it without a signature. And that he desperately wanted to invest for the future of his child. He rambled about how he wanted to get out of the service and get his inheritance and all of that. He kept telling me he was emailing me from his tent in Iraq. Also- he never sent me a pic of his daughter and only wanted to use his yahoo address because his military one had correspondence from the Army. His email is goldphils@yahoo.com. First of all, having been married to a Army guy for tons of years, I knew something wasn’t right. Captains don’t ramble on about transferring money and they usually have that organized. The military makes available to the soldiers whatever they need, and if not, they know how to obtain it without having to get help from us. Unless you know the soldier, never send them any type of information especially bank info. Now, if soldiers want to send us money, fine. But they would have to send it to a PO Box. I think these scammers are very good at what they do, but I am so glad that I figured it out. The soldier in the pic, he is very handsome, but I know now that whoever he is, this guy isn’t him. Soldiers who are sole parents are rarely if ever deployed from their kids. The guy really messed up when he emailed me to tell me he was chilling in a hotel room, had the day off. Since when do our troops chill in the middle of war areas in hotel rooms? How does one go from a tent to a hotel room in a few days? Hello! Anytime any man ask for money, that should be a huge red flag. Date sites can be fine, but yes, there are predators and we have to watch out for each other I think. Captains make good incomes and they would have no reason for any of this garbage. Don’t feel stupid if you have been a victim, just use the wisdom and don’t buy the sob stories, because the Armed Forces will always find a way to help it’s troops.

TO ALL: SO ONE OF THE NEW ONES CONTACTING ME THIS WEEK – BROOKS LAWSON – 47YR OLD WITH ONE SON AGE 4, DOING RESEARCH FOR CHEVRON, IN NIGERIA OF COURSE, LOOKING FOR LOVE AND MARRIAGE WITH GOOD WOMAN, DID NOT WASTE ANY TIME HITTING ME FOR MONEY TODAY. 18. Margaret Rodgers says

to All : I don’t know if it is the season or something in the water, or what it is. I seem to be bombarded with these snakes this week. I see John Mark is cruising Shtyle.fm again today. He won’t respond to me. Haahaa. I asked him why his letter came to me as John Wilson and from India and not Kabul. No answer.. I believe he is Michael Preston, a.k.a. Kenneth Preston, Lee Preston,, Richard Wilson, John Wilson, and John Mark and God knows how many other names he has used.
New names addressing me are: Micheal Donovan, David Woods, Robin (no other name given) email robin_mark1@yahoo.com, Bobby Pino email bob_us49@yahoo.com, and Steve Larry. All these I highly suspect are scammers. Same letter scenario, wife died, left with one child, looking for wife and love and God fearing woman. just different names. on the letters. Wish they would get a new form letter. So watch out for these names.

  19. Margaret Rodgers says

To Wallis – i also believe the military men have access to computers, and are issued a email address and all ending in .mil. I believe Robert can explain that to you on here. I think they don’t really need laptops to communicate on he internet.

  20. Margaret Rodgers says

To Ja – guy is absolutely scamming. The reason he was on dating site, to find victims. I just had one trying to get me to send money $300 to $500 for a satellite phone, claiming he wanted to hear my voice. I laughed and told him the chat on computer then would have to be enough. This was Walterian7. Have not heard from him since. Anyone claiming to be in the service and asking you for money, is a scammer. Our military men , the real ones, do not do this. They don’t need to.

  21. Margaret Rodgers says

To Wendy – i see a Michael Ramos Blakestone on Facebook. Nothing on the profile.Being blank would make it suspicious. No info or friends listed. Says he is signed up on “Are You Interested” which is Facebooks dating site. I am on it but have had no contact by him. I definitely will remember his face and name if he does. I am definitely leary of facebook profiles that are blank. Means not real.

  22. Margaret Rodgers says

To Wallis – Don’t feel sorry for him, it most likely is all lies. He feels only excited he may get money from you. Feels nothing for you other than a good prospect.on the line. They are in Ghana, Nigeria, and i have a couple coming at me right now i traced to India. They play on your soft heart, that’s their main target your” heart!!!. ” They are a disease these men.By the way some arn’t men, but women. I have one named Walter Bruston who has been online with me now almost 8 months.
Each time he tries a different scenario with me when he doesn’t succeed in getting money from me. He comes up with a different story about himself. I stay on just to see what hilarious story i get next. I only sent him money once, $3000 back in March, fool I was, i thought he was real. I knew nothing about scammers then. Had never even heard of them I know a lot know, due to research.. So because I sent that, he tried for more, unsuccessful with me, he said he was sorry, he had lied and then changed his whole story as to who he was and why he needed money. Well the latest is now he is a antique dealer on the run, hiding from someone who is trying to kill him. He claims to have no money what so ever to live on or survive on and is trying to get anywhere from $300 to $500 from me asking for hotel faire, food money, and internet costs. He’s hiding but is living in a hotel, with TV according to him, will tell me he has to go, that he is going to eat, and makes a trip to this internet cafe to chat with me at least twice a day.So i am insulted he thinks i am such an idiot . His language online has improved 100 percent now, no more inappropriate language errors like cuz or cos as he now confesses to being American/British. I actually think i have a different person who has taken over. I believe they change people working you. I have noticed about 4 different personalities online in the last 8 months who pretend to be this Walter. I told him today to go to the Embassy for help and he suddenly was out of time and left the line. (Chuckling).

  23. sgtedwardfedric@yahoo.com This conman is on tagged again. He goes under Edwards W his email this time is edwards.wagner@yahoo.com. … He also uses edwardallanis007@yahoo.com

  24. I answered this Romero’s request for friendship after reading his sob story about his wife forsaking him while he was defending our country, and it turned out he was such a crook, when I realized I played along, I was the most love sick Juliet . Amost sent him a laptop and a majic jack and perfume, but the address was so vague, somewhere in Ghana. I guess that is the seat of them. I feel sorry for this

Captain Hannett , whose indentity was stolen. I have all these photos of him and his Buddies, I hope someone stops them and put them where they should.
