Internet Dating Scam: Fake Soldiers

I just came across a post on “A Soldier’s Perspective” discussing a rather disgusting and disturbing trend that has guys posing as soldiers on Internet dating sites. Here’s the quote from CJ’s:

The latest trend involves trolling internet dating sites and convincing women that they are honorable Soldiers who have fallen in love and would do anything to communicate with the object of their affection. But, because they are deployed to Afghanistan or Iraq, they need you to sign up for an expensive telecommunications service like “Military TELEX” in order to make that happen. They profess unending love as their motivator and, unfortunately, many women have fallen for it.

The BIG red flag here is that the guy is asking for money. NEVER fall for that con.

If you come across anyone on a dating site who is asking you for money, regardless of the reason; block them immediately from further contact and then report them to the internet dating service.

You can also check out who is really behind their email address…

AND / or their telephone number…

To read specific details about about one incident, read CJ’s post “The New Military Dating Scam”.

  2. Hi Robert Mclaughlin,
Thank you for responding. I did goggle him and ask for his .mil address. He said that due to his high rank, the risk is too high for him. I do have military friends here. My friends told me it is true cause the .mil address is accessible right to our Ministry. Maybe we dont use .mil but the same code in our country. He sound nice. Claim he is 55 years, divorce, 2 son that are already married. I was scam before and I just to make sure this is not another one.

  3. @Deb. Yes there is a group on FB of which I am a member. They have a website called facecrook..here is the link to the website…http://facecrook.amitm.com/
They have photos and alias of thousands of Scammers..
    Hope this helps girls..

  4. MSG Robert Mclaughlin says

Lisa, the Major General is real, you can Google his name, but if the person you are speaking to is not using a .mil address then you have a fraud on your hands.

  5. Hello all!
Well, unfortunately here’s another one to add to the list. . . “Major Marc Bernard”. . . marc_bernard13@yahoo.com. . . . I’ve reported this to a number of authorities thus far and will continue to do so. Also, there is a Facebook group which is gathering more information on this. I’ve also been in touch with some media outlets to write or blog about this to get the word out there further. I suspected that this was bogus from the start but I kept it going to gather and bait the “conversations” and emails to track this back.

Luckily, I never sent $$ . . . never would . . . but this has to stop. This is reprehensible. . . using our soldiers to perpetrate this scam.

  9. Beverley new zealand says

    To Margaret
I put on a message herew 20th JUNE that i9s same Preston!

  10. Another new one contacted me few days ago pretending to be a US soldier serving on a peace keeping force in Afghanistan. His name Elias Wilson, email is wilson-elias2020@hotmail.com. Got very angry when I told him he is black money scammer, wrote back with all profanities but wrong English contraction…

  11. Margaret Rodgers says

For Everyone: I posted on June20th remarks concerning a John Mark. I have been able to achieve two emails from this one. He is claiming to be US Army contractor in Kabul. I traced the IP# to New Delhi India,, and second email traced said Mumbai India. So he is lying. Plus his letter said from John Wilson on the computer. I previously suspected John Mark may be Richard Wilson because both claimed in writing to be “Native American”. Richard Wilson was proved to be Sgt Preston . Sgt Preston came at me on Facebook and I told him he would be investigated and he disappeared and so now he is trying his luck using the name John Mark/John Wilson , and its all just as I suspected—-what a twist huh? You got to be on your toes and one step ahead!!! The letters i couldn’t believe, straight out of a scammers book -looking for true love, a wife, and he has all the greatest qualities a person could have, even calling me already his wife in the second one, and that made my mouth fall open. What really made me laugh was at the end of the letter he needed me to tell him all I knew about the Military!!!( So he knows what not to do of course) To sum it up, John Mark, John Wilson, Richard Wilson, Sgt. Preston I believe is one and the same scammer. I set out to prove John Mark a scammer, and I believe I have.

  12. Margaret Rodgers says

To Lynnie: My scammer uses the name Walter Bruston, says based in Nigeria. In March he asked me to send $3000 for his leave to come to me here in the States, unfortunately I sent it before I found out civilians pay for nothing for these things. Leaves are earned from what i understand. Robert can tell you all about this. Anyway, he did not come, telling me he had to cover the Nigerian election according to his commanding officer. This is when I found out Walter was a scammer. Yours is too. It could even be the same scammer.

  13. Here is another identity.. Lt Colonel Frank Brown, ( f.browm222@hotmail.com ) used picture of Senator Scott Brown (R) representative of Massachusetts. I believe he is a reserve Colonel in the Army. Very good looking guy. I almost fall for it, but got suspicious because of how quick this guy falls in love with me… Story line, about to retire, 30 yrs in service never married. Seriously looking at retiring in Australia, or the country you are from. Supposedly at the time of contact, he is in UK in a joint retirement seminar orientation, that culminates in 2 weeks followed by a retirement ceremony , then he will fly immediately to Australia as civilian. USA diplomat father, Spanish Mother, death now,he spends his early yrs in RSA. Have accent, but well spoken , and good correct grammar. After I found out his real identity, I insulted him as the dumbest monkey who doesnt know how to do his saming job properly… He was all apologetic, and finally let me see him in person through skype. He is a 6ft 4 31 yr old Nigerian of course operating in Malaysia. They are there on student visa, but doing full time scamming operation. The Malaysian based Scammer are sticking to their routes, so they scam women from SIngapore , Australia, Phil. HK etc. I got his pictures in real life and in real location in his apartment in Malaysia He became too fresh and told me all about all the possible scenario they use, and all the tools they used, including sending the ladies flowers, purchased on stolen cards. All the phones they used issuing different numbers mainly UK code ( it’s a receiving divert number they buy )

Another fake one is Sgt Thomas Hassmin , ( thomashassmin@yahoo.com) currently serving in Kabul, 49 yrs old. soon to return to US. WIdower, have 1 18 yr old daughter named Sandy, studying African culture and in Ghana at the moment. His picture is believable , not so hot looking , but presentable. Tried to create a scenario already about his daughter being sick there of severe asthma attack and was hospitalized, and he have so many excuses of not benig able to sent money immediately. But he never ask for money , maybe waiting fr an offer, but of course no offer was forthcoming. He is still there on the side now and then popping up, with all his poetic emails. Trying his hardest to convince me to trust people. They are persistent and a smooth operator, lucky I am one of those people who don’t easliy fall trap. None of this 2 incident have reach as far as money asking… Mainly because they can sense it wasn’t the right time, I sound too practical .

Both these scammers are very sleek and articulate. More articulate than your average black Scammer.

  14. Kathleen says

To Susan : Aaron Ramos is a well know scammer on the Internet….The photo has been used by so many of these scammers that It’s getting quite funny….as I said before if you enter his name on FB he has tons of profiles
I really feel sorry for the real guy whos photos they are using…
Just remember that is is a scammer and warm others…
Like Margaret says he has friends on these profiles that sen genuine but they too could also be scammers…JUST BEWARE !

  15. Kathleen says

To Beverely: yes I have reported them to FB so far they have deleted only 1 Profile as far as I know..
FB are not really good a deleting profiles and that is why FACECROOK was made. It shows you the photos of all the scammers and their fake ID’s.
Might I suggest that you all register on this site and help them expose more.

This is another scammer on FB that has been scamming a friend of mine and she didn’t know it..

  16. MSG Robert Mclaughlin says

    Lynnie,
    VERY BIG CON JOB.

All, the Navy gets liberty, not the army, and liberty is only a pass for a few days. So if army and liberty is in the same sentence, watch out.

The army gets leave or a 3-day pass. The leave form is a DA31 and you can see it online. No one pays for leave. The MOST one pays is a plane ticket to their final destination. The military may get you to a base and from there you are on your own. But by then you are stateside.

You do not want a man in your life who is so unorganized he cannot even buy a $199 plane ticket.

    Anything Nigeria is a scam.

Ignore email addresses that do not end in .mil.

Recently I had the pleasure of checking out an individual and he came back as real. The second time this has happened. The lady asked for his home number and I looked it up, as well as middle name and other information. It looked good enough to move forward, plus he never asked for money,

  17. Elisabeth Bolt says

Well I am sorry to report that this is the new face of the online predator for me. She “got” my e-mail which happens to be my name and I am clearly not a male. I still bear the scars from my encounter with a Colonel that wasn’t and the Nigerian scammer who chose horrifically to use photos of a heroic dead Colonel who had been in Kabul for less than a week before he was blown up. But I digress. I grow weary of this constant attempt to entrap women whether from USA or Europe or NZ …… The sex of the perp has changed but the purpose is the same although this one sounds a bit kinky! My “cure” is to delete over & over. I do NOT waste my valuable time trying to do a reverse entrapment, etc. And the quick research I’ve done r/t the Nigerian agency supervising this behavior shows that it is a joke and this agency is unable to deal with their own public servants who are on the ground in Nigeria albeit the largest country in Africa. My own attempt to involve the State Police here resulted in this: if u lose money, call us back.

My advice is if it sounds too good to be true, it is. Broken hearts mend, slowly. No one in the military has anything but an e-mail that ends in .mil. Think about meeting people another way. Be careful who u e-mail. Report things like this as SPAM, don’t just delete. If u suspect a scammer on a site report them and think about closing your account on that site. The word on the street is that they all are permeated with scammers and that’s just the real world in 2011. Now, tell me what u think (now remember she is coming on to a middle aged and I suppose, high mileage unit:

Hi, how is your mood, weather?
Today here in my city is remarkable weather, and I have the perfect mood to sit on the internet. I want to tell you that we know each other a little, but I would like to know you better. Because we already had a mutual interest on the Internet one day, at the dating site. But I don’t visit that sites in Internet already. I have only your e-mail addressl.
And now I would like to continue talking with you, if you’re interested?
I think that if you’re still in search of a girl of your life, then we can try dating, right?
BUT I want to tell you that in the month of April, I tried to talk to the man whom I was interested at first. A few days later he asked me to show him my naked photos. Although we did not even know each other well.
And I never sent it to him, because I do not play online anygames. So I think that I’m a girl who appreciates myself and my culture, my upbringing. I would never have sent any naked body on the Internet – it would be a humiliation. I immediately lost all interest to that men. And never wrote him again. And from that moment has passed 2 months already.
But I hope you’re a different person. And if you can appreciate the right girl. And would never make a such request.
I also do not like to talk a lot about myself now. But I want to say that I’m very versatile girl and take care about myself always. I like sports and have some other hobbies.
I am 31 y.o. and I live in Minsk Belorus alone and I don’t have kids. My country located in the Belorus. Well I stop now. Because I even don’t know whether you want it? Or perhaps you have a wife or girlfriend already?
If so, then I apologize for this letter. Just don’t reply this. But if you’re really looking for a serious relationship and never want to play online. Then I would be happy to continue. I hope you will like it.
I am sending you a photo and a warm hugs from Minsk Belorus.
Hoping to get a nswer from you soon, and your new photos.

  24. Hi me again….forgot to ask if anyone knows of a Sgt Roland Smith based in Nigeria?

  25. Dear Robert,

I have been in contact with a soldier who is based in Nigeria claiming that he was there covering the election. Now that the election is over he is asking that i pay for his liberty pass to have three months leave. Does a g/f or family member have to pay for a soldier’s liberty pass or is it a big con?
