Internet Dating Scam: Fake Soldiers

I just came across a post on “A Soldier’s Perspective” discussing a rather disgusting and disturbing trend that has guys posing as soldiers on Internet dating sites. Here’s the quote from CJ’s:

The latest trend involves trolling internet dating sites and convincing women that they are honorable Soldiers who have fallen in love and would do anything to communicate with the object of their affection. But, because they are deployed to Afghanistan or Iraq, they need you to sign up for an expensive telecommunications service like “Military TELEX” in order to make that happen. They profess unending love as their motivator and, unfortunately, many women have fallen for it.

The BIG red flag here is that the guy is asking for money. NEVER fall for that con.

If you come across anyone on a dating site who is asking you for money, regardless of the reason; block them immediately from further contact and then report them to the internet dating service.

You can also check out who is really behind their email address…

AND / or their telephone number…

To read specific details about about one incident, read CJ’s post “The New Military Dating Scam”.

Beware of another scammer calling himself Sergt Dean Williams, currently servcing as a US Soldier in Kabul, Afghanistan for peace keeping. He is also on facebook.

He claims to be divorced for 4 years with 4 children and will be leaving Kabul soon on the 11th of June 2011. Do not be fooled by this man, who has posted pictures of maybe the real Dean Willlaims with his kids and ex wife, who he has named as Leslie.

He is a scammer with poor grammar. He says that he is a Belgian, but born and brought up in the US, in West Palm Beach, Florida!.

    Posted as a warning!!!!!!.

  2. To Margaret: Walterian7 is the one I wrote about recently on here. He contacted me through Are You Interested? Not much conversation with him though. I kept asking for his military email but he wouldn’t respond. I did report him to AYI. First, they said they could not find his profile. Then after giving them what little info I had on him, they said they found him and deleted him.

New one contacted me. Goes by jonesbob01@yahoo.com. Yahoo messaged with him for a few. Decided I would play his game for a little while. I asked what he did, and he said he is in Afganistan in engineering. Using info from my previous scammer, I told him my ex is in the Army in Gaza. Wanting to bait him, I told him I wanted to pay for my exes early retirement because I wanted him home. Then, he said he had to go because his “boss” needed him. Don’t catch him on Yahoo messenger but he keeps sending my messages thru AYI that he is interested.

The military has the pay grades E-1 to E-10 for enlisted, O-1 to O-10 for officer, and W-1 to W-5 for warrant officers. My rank in the Army is Master Sergeant, and grade is E-8. When a Navy guy says he is an O-6 that is the equivalent of Colonel…a VERY educated person with tons of responsibility. You will be very hard pressed to find any on dating sites.

  4. Hi all, still got Sgt Bryant contacting me.Told him I had been to pay money into the account he gave and that the manager had taken me into office.Told him the account was being monitored due to suspicious activity! He told me this was a test set by the US army to see if I told anyone about his leave. Was so pleased I passed the test! What a complete crock of shit!Unsuprisingly the US army now want me to send his money to an address in Nigeria via Moneygram!Have been doing a lot of detective work and gave him password for a dummy face bookaccount so he could log in and see some of my old pics! When he tried Facebook informed me that some one had ltried to log in and was that ok….the location …yep Lagos Nigeria!Got so much stuff on this numpty now need to know how to upload pics emails etc.

To Beverly New Zealand: There was never any reason for you to have to clarify to me that we only tell each other about these sites and not to scammers. Somehow I get the impression you think I am , or have done this, which really makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up. I think it would go without saying, and would be ludicrous for any of us who have been victims to inform them of anything we are doing. So I hope you savvy this, dear. I don’t need to feel any more stupid by anyone else than this scammer has already made me feel. I have spent hours, staying up all night, investigating, researching, trying to find and gather information that would be helpful to all of us and trying to post what I have found out. I don’t know what your problem is with me but it surely seems as though one of them has truly hurt you. I would like to say that I and my family have been devastated by this scammer and healing is a long way off. Thank you.

  14. Margaret Rodgers says

Everyone watch out for the name John Cooper, believe this is scammer Walter Bruston trying out a new name on me, also possible scammer John Mark posing Military, on Shytle and Richard Wilson in uniform and is on Shytle also. Interesting News: Walterian7 contacts me on chat on Shytle – he says his first name is Ian. I asked his last name he says Walter. (lol) I said where are you, he says Chicago!!! So I said I think your kidding. He says LOL and says he is still deployed. I said where, let me guess, Nigeria, and he says where is that? I said in Africa like Lagos, Nigeria? He says oh never heard of it…then he says he is in Kubul..!! I said are you Army, he says…nope….Navy. I said what grade are you, he says 06. I said does this make you an Officer, (no reply, long pause.) .then he comes back and says I am going to stop talking to you unless you tell me something good…( and this kinda throws me for a second but only for a second, and like a flash I realize what he does mean) he means do I have $6000 he’s been trying to get from me for the last six weeks!!! ( I gulped, thinking oh God I was right, it is him,) then I said what would something “good” be? No reply – six minutes goes by, dead silence, he’s gone. So I do believe that is the scammer Walter Bruston. One very interesting thing I found was that this person spoke very good english, None of the usual mistakes in grammar. WB sounds very typical of what most of us hear, the poor grammar, “have missed you much” , mixing up words. I am wondering if the sounding foreign thing isn’t just an act. I traced his very first two emails to me I got and they came back from Lagos Nigeria, and further investigation got me the name Shelly Donald originally from Texas, schooled in Africa, ( i found her name on the graduating list) along with a guy named Joshua David also graduating from the same school with her. His name was associated with the emails also. I often felt like I was talking to two different people at times, and I believe they are a team. Can’t prove this I suppose, but my inner feeling is that I am dead on. She has an alias also of Anita S. Curtis and has a page under this name on Face book and she claims here to be presently living in Lagos. It took me hours of investigating to get this little information but it was well worth the time in satisfaction.

Beverly: You keep saying to me that we don’t give scammers the names of the sites we use, and you just gave me another one, I would like to know why in the world would I do that and whatever gave you the impression I was. I may not be the smartest person in the world but that would surely have to make me the dumbest, now wouldn’t it???

Ronald: Is there such a grade in the Navy as an 06? I am curious if he knew what he was talking about or did he just throw that out there.
I hope this week, all of us have been able to make them miserable in what ever way we could.

  15. Hey Robert, ;-))
(i know exectly what you mean by “your parents and calling you by your full name,my dad used all my names when i was in trouble and i have 4 names, lol)
I tried to get my scammer blocked from the site (badoo) and i send them 5 messages to inform them about this man, using thr profile of sgt A Giunta all the time, and yes they only block the person, big chance he will return again.
So tnx again for this tip, i’ll try again to contact the site and write them about this.

  16. Hello everyone!

I have posted comments about robertwhite@hotmail.fr claiming he was stationned in Irak. I also had another conversation with another person with the same type of email. This is another one with the same story, wife died, has a dog and says OK alot, lol. The following is an email he sent to me on Lavalife. One word of advice if you are on a dating site and the person wants you to remove yourself from the site. Do not communicate any further and if he continues Report Him.

I like your profile here and it sound so sweet… my name is Anthonius , i was married but lost my woman years back.. i live alone and i have 1 dog living with me also, i am new here and i am searching for a soulmate, but i believe firstly i must make a friendship with a woman before moving into relationship, cause a success relationship starts from friendship and i want you to know i am a funny, loving, caring, understanding, loyal, serious when am on duty lol, i like to respect a woman so much just as my mom taught me, well let me stop here and wait to hear from you before i tell you more about me ok and if you have an email which i can send you more pictures of me at please do write me at anthoniusbonnet@yahoo.com and tell more of also what braught you to this site also my skype name is anthonius bonnet , have you meet with a man before? what you want in a man and tell me about your past relationship’s, so i will wait to hear back from you ok..

    Anthonius B..

I am happy to help, thanks for the kind words. It feels so formal when you use my entire name and title, as if I am in trouble, like when your parents call you and use your middle name. 🙂 Call me Robert, please!

Sadly when you see a scammer blocked, it is only that profile. See if you can get the dating site to block the ISP (Internet Service provider) and not just the person. If you still get scams see if they will block the country. I doubt Nigerian men are in high demand in Europe and the USA, and you will stop more scams than ruin possible relationships. I’m all for blacklisting them.

  25. I asked my scammer his home base, he told me he hasn’t a house 😉
A soldier (sgt) who doesn’t know the meaning of home base????? 1 month before he told me he had 4 houses, 1 in Florida, 1 in NY, and two other houses i asked him, will you mail me from your mill.address, he send me 1 page with 10.000.00 digits and letters picked from the internet, (military site)
My friend asked him what is your Job, and when he could not answere right away, she said, that should roll of your tongue right away, like spit.
Later on he told me; “your friend asked me what is your Mos job roll, i have tell him all honey(friend is a woman, you see what i mean?)
