Internet Dating Scam: Fake Soldiers

I just came across a post on “A Soldier’s Perspective” discussing a rather disgusting and disturbing trend that has guys posing as soldiers on Internet dating sites. Here’s the quote from CJ’s:

The latest trend involves trolling internet dating sites and convincing women that they are honorable Soldiers who have fallen in love and would do anything to communicate with the object of their affection. But, because they are deployed to Afghanistan or Iraq, they need you to sign up for an expensive telecommunications service like “Military TELEX” in order to make that happen. They profess unending love as their motivator and, unfortunately, many women have fallen for it.

The BIG red flag here is that the guy is asking for money. NEVER fall for that con.

If you come across anyone on a dating site who is asking you for money, regardless of the reason; block them immediately from further contact and then report them to the internet dating service.

You can also check out who is really behind their email address…

AND / or their telephone number…

To read specific details about about one incident, read CJ’s post “The New Military Dating Scam”.

hi ladies just had a wee check on google again and found out MR RAYMOND BARCINAS is using CHUMMY CLUB as well probably every site there is he is using dont let him scam yous tell all your friends about all the sites these guys are scamming on have a good day people 🙂

  2. One earlier post mentioned about not being able to save a chat. What I did was convert the chat to email and email it to myself and sometimes I email it to my scammer as well, although at the time I was not aware I was being scammed.

Scammers will always be around. By being aware of their existence, by educating ourselves of how they operate is the only way we can challenge them. If someone tells you of falling in love, without meeting you personally is lying.

  3. To let you all know that if Colonel Robert Gonzales is mentioned ….you are certainly, without any doubt whatsoever BEING SCAMMED as I fell victim to this from Scum using the Identity of Daniel Knotts. Colonel Robert Gonzales was the name being used as the officer in charge of releasing papers.
I’m still hurting and trying to get over it.And yes Ellen I have learnt the hard way.

to Ellen this fake soldier is just hitting nz now It is a variation of a 419 scam which has a site and can report

  7. Beverley new zealand says

to wendy another one who lives on an orchestrated litany of lies Be careful he could get nasty and threaten you Cant you report him to the website like I do?

  8. Beverley new zealand says

to LYNDA You can report him to Yahoo and block the Pest I do that

  9. MSG Robert McLaughlin says

Eefje, I am glad you re telling others your story. Folks assume they found the good guy and no way can he be bad. The scammers are real pros.

Wendy, quite a fishing expedition you have going on there! Good work! Keep it up. Double your catch by asking if they have a brother who is just as sweet for a friend of yours. Yes, sad that scammers are taking over websites that had good intentions. Fish long enough you will find the cracks in their stories.

Beverley New Zealand, the scammers may get caught and busted but the money is long gone, sorry to say. And the Army has no such forms, our leave form is a DA31. DA means Department of the Army, DD means Department of Defense, and you can google the blank forms. AND if the scammer sends you one completed, a recruiter can run the supposed social security numbers. But thin about it, WHY the effort? Who not “Hi sweetie I will be home on leave on the 3rd at 7:10pm, flight 123 at JFK airport” like regular people do! Liars always feel they need to embellish.

Ellen, once the scammers learn that the name is a known fake they will simply change the name and keep scamming.

  15. Msg Robert Mclaughlin Thank you for you information and help. I posted sometime ago about a scammer that I came accross and have been since following this web site about others. I live near a airbase in california and have several email male friends that I correspond with while they are on active duty. You wrote last time to string them along. One of my military friends suggested I go fishing. Using the web site plenty of fish aka pof I threw out the line just to see what I could catch. Did not take long I just did a search in their favorite area. Male – good looking – DIVORCED – I simply stated in message would you like to talk. The real men don’t answer lol. Once we chat I figure out real soon real or not. I did find a real man and explained what I was doing. He was very nice about it and will still send emails occasionally. Once fake one on the line I string him along to get much needed info then contact pof to have him removed. I will start to list the names and any information here if that helps. So far AKA Chester Foxx ,Chester Zachary Foxx – Marine retired after 22 years serv never been married ( you going love this part) He does special opps for marines as civilian and they even let him bring his dog a doberman to help patrol. I almost pee’d my pants when he told me that. Next one is Patrick from Louisanna top secrete miltary computer base for job and thats all I have for now still in the works will keep you posted. And here I never liked to fish before. I know this will not stop them and they will only set up new account but I will find them again – Wendy

  16. Ellen, The scammer using the name Raymond Barcinas is from Ghana. But unless you can find an agency to prosecute, it probably won’t do much good to know. I reported him to IC3 and have not heard anything back – and I had quite a bit of information, including a PO Box and his Ghanaian name or contact’s name, and 3 phone numbers. Good luck – I wish someone would catch the little weasel. I saw him on cam as Barcinas’ adopted son, but I am sure he is the scammer himself. Wish I had captured some pix of him while I had him on cam – like it would do any good! But at least we can warn others through our experience.

  17. Well folks if you get contacted by a Greg Miller ; watch out he is a scammer. I traced his email and it is from Ghana, Africa and he says he is stationed in Kabul.

  18. I guess i am the only Dutch woman over here? Or are there other fellow country(wo)man who discover this site, and i did’t noticed? By the way, we have a program on Dutch TV, by the name of “opgelicht”, meaning “cheated”, and i learnd it happends to a lot to women over here too, i wonder wher they are……
So i want to say,to everyone, please, don’t be ashamed bcuz you fall for this, it happends to many (wo)men, all over the world. It only tells you, you are concerned with people in need, the only thing is, we all have to be a little more suspicious, we all teach our kids to be carfull on the internet, (I did) never give a stranger your ID or address or any other personal details, and alway’s listen to your intuition, my own daughters took my lessons well, but i did not listen to myself…..
Anyway, i am carefull now and learnd my lesson well!! ;).
And i told my childeren also about “my” scammer, so they will never ever fall for it, at least they know how to recognize the methods of these people.

  19. To Lynda,
Hey Lynda, you wrote some things about; post comment on their Yahoo Wall, and then find out with whom the scammers are communicating with. How do you do that? And can you teach me how to do that myself? The “son”of my scammer also use Yahoo, and the more i chat with him, the more rude he speaks and the more he sounds not atall like a teenager, (I have a lot of experience with the behavior of teenagers, i have two of my own LOL). Maybe you know i am Dutch, and i do understand most of what you all wrote, but not everything, so maybe we can mail to each other? The problem is i am scared the scammer i am scamming now, will someday learn about this site and therefor i am affraid to put my e-mailaddress over here. I don’t know how that is for you? So i can mail you? I will be very happy, if i know how to learn about this Yahoo wall, tnx for sharing

  20. To MSG Robert McLaughlin,
How cool are you yourself!! For giving all the good advice;-)
I send an e-mail to you, hope you recived it, tnx a lot.

  23. Ollyville says

@Intervention Time..your post on December 9, 2010, you should send her information and if you know any of the fake soldiers name, forward it here too, you can also share this link with her, so far, am glad that i have been able to stop some women from being scammed. The admin here should be able to contact “intervention Time”.

  24. Ollyville says

Well @Ellen.. glad you know now. what i do is google or search any fake soldiers name on fb, trace their contacts and inform anyone on their list about them. the fact is that we can’t completely stop scam but only bring it to minimal. thumbs up Ellen, now you pass the message to your friends also. if you want to catch a monkey, behave like a monkey.

NB: Not all Nigerians are Scammers, and also not only Nigerians do this, Dating scam has its root in Russia and some other European countries, its amazing that some women/men give these Africans tips, they even pay for site and send to them. Please there are many good Nigerian men out there….

  25. Beverly, I’m interested in knowing who actually arrested the scammer you mentioned in your post? I reported my fake soldier to the FBI, but have received no response, I know they are swamped. I don’t think our FBI has any presence in Nigeria, so I’m curious if you know more about who is arresting these scammers??? Plus, I was told if the IP address is traced to Nigeria, the FBI turns it over to the Secret Service.

By the way, my fake soldier is Douglas Afford, on secret assignment (lol) in Afghanistan. You can post a comment on their yahoo wall and others they are communicating with can see the post. I saw the post of another lady he was talking with, contacted her and found he is using same name, same pictures and same story with her – she lives in another country from me…. Post on their wall – “He is scammer stay away” and maybe others he is communicating with will see it…
