Internet Dating Scam: Fake Soldiers

I just came across a post on “A Soldier’s Perspective” discussing a rather disgusting and disturbing trend that has guys posing as soldiers on Internet dating sites. Here’s the quote from CJ’s:

The latest trend involves trolling internet dating sites and convincing women that they are honorable Soldiers who have fallen in love and would do anything to communicate with the object of their affection. But, because they are deployed to Afghanistan or Iraq, they need you to sign up for an expensive telecommunications service like “Military TELEX” in order to make that happen. They profess unending love as their motivator and, unfortunately, many women have fallen for it.

The BIG red flag here is that the guy is asking for money. NEVER fall for that con.

If you come across anyone on a dating site who is asking you for money, regardless of the reason; block them immediately from further contact and then report them to the internet dating service.

You can also check out who is really behind their email address…

AND / or their telephone number…

To read specific details about about one incident, read CJ’s post “The New Military Dating Scam”.

  3. Hi,
I’ve been daiting this military man named David Litton and he’s I’m the Army. He says he’s in Syria and we’ve been talking on yahoo messenger for about 4 months. He says because he’s in a combat zone that he has no access to his bank account and that he wants me to set up cummunication so we can talk but it cost $300! I told him I didn’t have it. He was like “Okay babe I understand.” He has a Facebook page that’s how we meet. So if anyone has any advice please let me know.

    Thanks,
    Renee

  4. Nina Bloodworth says

Thanks, I was just wondering if they might be using a picture of James Rellinger because he has contacted me. Plus no more funds from this old girl.

I appreciate everything you do for this site.

    Have a great day.

Beware that these scammers keep our email addresses and are so incredibly stupid that they believe we will fall for the following – with extremely poor English language usage:

  6. Been chatting with a John Castillo in the U.S.Army. divorce 11 year old son stays with relative. station in afghan. wants money.glasshorse52@gmail.com beware

  7. Margaret Rodgers says

Nina – don’t go by the picture. Go by the name being used. The pictures are all stolen. Some pictures of James Ramos are posted on Romancescam.com and on Scamwarners.com also. This name James Ramos has been used tons of times and is infamous as a scammer on the Internet. These people are commonly in a ring, a criminal ring. If you want to call them people. I call them maggots. They pass the name and email ID like James Ramos around to each other. Each tries his luck with it. You most often will be chatting with a different person. Just delete and move on. You’ll save yourself a lot of heartache and your money. Trust me. I have been following many of these goons for 3yrs now.

  8. Anyone heard of Camp Phoenix is Kabul, Afghanistan?

  9. This is for a young lady name Melinda who says she has pictures of a James Ramos. Would you please send me a copy of his picture??
my email is ninafaye26@yahoo.com the name is very familiar to me I appreciate this very much. I think he may be a guy who is trying to scam me.

  10. Margaret Rodgers says

TO MELINDA; The name James Ramos is very well known as a scammer. Information I believe can be found on him on Scamwarners.com and Romancescam.com as well as on this site.

  11. Margaret Rodgers says

TO CYNTHIA; You can turn in and post what information you have such as pictures and email id’s to Romancescam.com.

  12. Margaret Rodgers says

TO GLORIA: I have been contacted before by the scammer calling himself Mark Miller. He use’s other alias’s also. The latest on my list is Mark Johnson. He uses some sort of catastrophe in life to ask for money. He has gone from a successful business contractor to now living and hiding in an abandoned truck in Nigeria after being robbed. ..hahaha Don’t get me wrong, I have never given him anything. The other I want to report goes by Jeff Turner. Uses email id of “MeetJeffTurner”. Be real careful of this one, he speaks perfect English, and is real smooth. He claims to have a degree in economics and is working as a bodyguard for a contractor in oil from Libya. His email I traced to the UK. Avoid both these scammers.

  13. MSG Robert McLaughlin says

Well this website has been around for a while. We have new people here scammed for the first time. Sadly the scammers are the same old ones and they have had YEARS to be able to perfect their methods. As time goes by they are better spellers, better liars, and better “lovers.” They have learned from time, their own mistakes, and received positive feedback whenever one type of wording wotks and another doesn’t. And they will keep winning unless we can stay ahead of them.

I have a suggestion. Since English is most likely not their first language, and if it is they know British English not American English, I suggest that everyone use more slang, idioms, and colloquialisms. So rather than say Sir, Mr., or a rank, say ‘hey dude, ‘sup?” and those not from about here will have to work doubly hard to figure out what we are saying, whereas American would reply with, “Just hangin'” and we all know that to be proper reply.

So if someone cannot “get into the groove” while chatting with you and seems too formal, think twice about them.

In other news, I was hacked recently so I am with you guys in the same boat. Lost money and should have known better. I trsuted a website with issues when I should not have.

Also I retired in Otober after 33 years and one day or seervice, but they still have me on the books until “officially” retired.

I’m not going anywhere though. You;re stuck with me. 🙂

    • Thank you for your service and again it is all about the art of the scam as this guy stated he was an ARMY LTCOL and he lost his wife on 9/11 and on blah blah and then the money requests came and he got nothing from me and that is why I am stating to be careful of one Stephen J Daly

    • a nigerian scammer who scammed me using nathan johnson, his in moonit dating website, his name in his moonit account freeman16 lives in dover delaware..& i found all the pictures that he used it,temi johnson… his a really good scammer…

  14. His name is Major Scott James I even have a picture of him different from the one on the site. I have tried to compare the 2 but not the same, well at least not to me. Hails from New York State. Wanted me to send him a $300.00 phone but this is how he wrote it it only cost 300$ and 50$ to send it . Do we see something wrong with that . Hate to say American’s do not put $ after the amount. And hell your a Major getting more money than I and you want me to pay for a phone for you…I played along for a bit. I even have an email address…..scozzy1414@yahoo.com . Was on before and so was he so yes being me I had to play a bit…tells me I am going to block you once I started to say certain things…….away the dirt bag went. This realllllllly upsets me to know end and I am going to continue getting to who this Mother is…… You see I am the proud mother of a Sailor….and that is total disrespect to all our troops ..at least to me. You all have a great day and lets get them all for the disrespect they are showing to anyone past present and future who may serve in OUR MILITARY. THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and god help them if they are one of ours just scamming grrrrr then they should be punished toooo. bye for now Judy

  15. Hi.

I am writing on behalf of a friend I am somewhat worried about.

She has been dating a guy named Gary White who claims to be in the usaf lt.gw@hotmail.com for some time. I don’t wish to go into her story but his actions are TOTALLY questionable and he treats her like dirt.

His friend, a Graham Reeves Greevee66@gmail.com or greevee66@live.co.uk has also contacted her.

if any ladies have also come across these two characters, please, let her know. pearsonkelly@hotmail.co.uk I will let her know I have posted this so it won’t be a surprise. Thankyou ladies. God bless.
    Leanne xx

HI Everyone and Merry Christmas. Hope everyone is smart enough in 2014 to dodge the pukes known as scammers. My last message to you all this year is to let you know , and am sorry I forgot where on the internet i read this, but the last census taken was that 98% of men on dating sites were proven to be scammers. Assume first they are scammers, because odds are they are, and then go from there. Good luck.

  20. Has anyone had any dealings with a Sgt George Paul Reynold serving in Eggers Camp, kabul

  21. Hi All,
Has anyone heard of a Alfie Griffiths also Alfred Griffiths. Supposed to be deployed in Helman, Afghanistan. He said he was British living in Bordon but I’ve never heard of Bordon. Said he lost his wife to cancer 6 years ago and ever since has been married to his job and is supposed to be his last tour with the Army. Also has a 16 year old son. He then goes on to say that he is a graduate of Western Michigan University and had an internship and residency at Wayne State University. He writes very well with excellent grammer. He has not asked for any money yet but I’ve only just started talking to him. I believe he is a scammer but time will tell.

    • Hi
My Mother has been talking to this man for months now. Also in December. I had my suspicions from the start and told my mother. I think this made her wary but he managed to reassure her even showing himself briefly but not very clearly on Skype. I read lots about army romance scams on the Internet and continued to express my concern. She was due to meet him at Heathrow yesterday when he returned from Afghanistan for his retirement. He didn’t show. I found your message yesterday and showed her. He is now saying he is stuck in Delhi as was sold a bad ticket. After seeing your message and his ridiculous story my Mother is now sure he is a scammer. What happened with you?

  22. I had met a guy nammed douglas w. schofield, we talked for months and he got alot of money from me. he is a real good scammer. i kept all pics and messages on yahoo. Now i am being contacted by a guy named sgt. anderson davenport, and low and behold, its aka. douglas schofield, mark miller and many other names.

  23. Have been contacted by Army Sgt Frank Roy Cappell. I am pretty sure he is a scammer . Claims to be widowed, raising a 16yr old daughter, parents both deceased! Says he is in Kabul, Afganistan , ( don’t know Who is raising the girl ? ! Has been contacting me off & on since Aug of 2013. I have blocked him more than once but he uses an app for smart phone called Pinger , told me it was a communication device used by the military ! Lol , I already knew better has asked me for $$$$ more than once but I have refused . I know this person is not currently deployed in Afganistan ! Would like to know who thereal soldier really is or if he even exists?

  24. ive been talking to a soldier he has not asked for money or anything like that. he told me he is in the cavalry and armored division. he told me the town he comes from which i googled its a real place we dont talk all day just maybe an hour or so at night how do i find out if this man is real he is in kabul at the presant time facebook.com/phillips.dickerson

    • I use spokeo to try to validate information, names & locations . . . Reading these I figure the guy I have been talking with is fake . . .sad . . . . his grammer is stilted and he initially asked for t-shirts, underware, deoderant then shoes, chain and a watch . . . He likely will want stuff sent to Ghana . . that is a place he has said someone will forward to the soldiers. . . My daughter & her husband (both military) said this is not the way it goes. So . .
