Internet Dating Scam: Fake Soldiers

I just came across a post on “A Soldier’s Perspective” discussing a rather disgusting and disturbing trend that has guys posing as soldiers on Internet dating sites. Here’s the quote from CJ’s:

The latest trend involves trolling internet dating sites and convincing women that they are honorable Soldiers who have fallen in love and would do anything to communicate with the object of their affection. But, because they are deployed to Afghanistan or Iraq, they need you to sign up for an expensive telecommunications service like “Military TELEX” in order to make that happen. They profess unending love as their motivator and, unfortunately, many women have fallen for it.

The BIG red flag here is that the guy is asking for money. NEVER fall for that con.

If you come across anyone on a dating site who is asking you for money, regardless of the reason; block them immediately from further contact and then report them to the internet dating service.

You can also check out who is really behind their email address…

AND / or their telephone number…

To read specific details about about one incident, read CJ’s post “The New Military Dating Scam”.

  1. I wrote before and received an answer and thank you. I have to admit, although I’m embarrassed, that I gave my scammer my name. He doesn’t know my address, I didn’t add him on Facebook, he doesn’t have my phone number or my personal email address (I spoke to him through my “dummy” email address), but I did give my name.
After I found out what he was, I reported him on the dating site where I met him. He messaged me and threatened me. Asked if I was looking to be killed and that he was forwarding my information to someone and I should look out.
Is there anything I can do? Anyone to report him to?
Lastly, I searched for myself by my name only on Google and it did not come up with my address as I have used a PO Box for years. Also, my Facebook is completely private. But I have to say I’m a little scared. Any advice?

  2. hello has anyone had a Capt Law Gerhard Kelvin e-mail them, he found me on areyouinterested or one of those on facebook. He woed me with words of love, and promise of marriage and to make my life better. He sent me many love letters for awhile, also over chats on facebook and yahoo. For a long time he never asked for money. Then one day he asked if he could trust me? I said yes he can, I am a good christian woman and he said while on Rampage on Abul, Afghanistan he and his colleagues helped out some people to safety and was greatly rewarded with gold and lots of cash and could he send it to me for safe keeping until his return to me in November.. I asked him several times do I have to pay anything and he said no, he will send money to his friend in the UK . I finally get an e-mail from someone claiming to be his friend and he said he sent the parcel to a place called gateway express in London, I get a e-mail from some lady supposedly Betty Morgan and it said he paid 1000Euros and I have to pay the remaining balance of 1.780Euros. I sent her back what, i messaged him and said I thought I didn’t have to pay anything? I am disabled and fighting to get disability? He said he didn’t know it would cost more? Then he said can I pay anything on it? I said no he said ok he will try to figure it out. Then he got mad and said I am a baby and no nothing? Then i said why are you being mean, he later said hes sorry and he still will love me even though I cannot pay anything. I traced his IP address and it came up Sunnyvale california not Afghanistan I have asked him why and no answer yet? I also traced the IP address of the Betty Morgan lady supposedly in London and it came back New York and then Nigeria? If anyone’s heard of a Lawerence Gerhard Kelvin posing as a Capt in the Army in Abul, Afghanistan please e-mail me at rsstarboard8@yahoo.com thanks

  5. Margaret Rodgers says

TO PENNY – I CRINGED WHEN READING YOUR POST THAT YOUR FRIEND GAVE SOMEONE HER BANK INFO. THIS GUY IS A SCAMMER. DISASTROUS RESULTS CAN HAPPEN HERE FOR HER. PLEASE HAVE HER CONTACT HER BANK IMMEDIATELY , CLOSE OUT THE ACCOUNT, AND START A FRESH ONE AND NEVER GIVE PERSONAL INFO OUT TO ANYONE OVER THE INTERNET OR PHONE. oUR mILITARY MEN ARE NOT REQUIRED TO PAY FOR THEIR RETIREMENT. i PRAY THIS INFO IS IN TIME.

  6. Margaret Rodgers says

TO MOONSKIN – YOU HAVE A SCAMMER. DON’T WORRY ABOUT HIM BEING REAL. BECAUSE HE IS NOT. THEY USE TWO FIRST NAMES IN THEIR MADE UP NAMES – SUCH AS HE HAS. i HAD ONE THAT USED JOHN MARK. COULD BE THE SAME SCAMMER. JUST REVERSING HIS NAME. HE IS USING THE SAME STORY LINE THEY USE – WIDOWED, ONE CHILD, LIVING WITH RELATIVE OR SOMEONE. HE JUST HAS NOT GOT AROUND TO ASKING YOU FOR ANYTHING YET. SOMETIMES THEY LIKE TO LAY OUT A FOUNDATION AND BE SURE YOU HAVE FALLEN FOR ALL THEIR LIES. LUCKY FOR YOU, YOU FOUND THIS WEB SITE. THEY LOVE USING FACEBOOK. HIS FB PAGE IS ALL FAKE. THE REASON THEY LIKE FACEBOOK IS ONCE YOU ADD THEM AS A FRIEND THEY CAN PICK UP MORE NAMES TO TRY AND SCAM AND ALSO PEOPLE TEND TO TRUST FACEBOOK UNFORTUNATELY. DELETE AND BLOCK ASAP.

  7. Margaret Rodgers says

TO PRISILLA MATHEWS – DON’T SEND MONEY TO THESE FAKES. MILITARY MEN NEED NO MONEY FROM US. THEY ARE PAID WELL, HAVE FULL MEDICAL BENEFITS, DON’T PAY FOR LEAVE OR RETIREMENT. THERE IS A CHANCE THE MONEY THEY SCAM FROM PEOPLE IS GOING TO TERRORISTS AND OR POSSIBLY YOU JUST PAID HIS RENT. ANYONE WHO ASKS FOR MONEY OR ANYTHING FINANCIAL YOU MET ON A DATING SITE IS A SCAMMER.

  8. MSG Robert McLaughlin says

  10. I recently met a man that says he is Army and stationed in Kabul, Afghanistan. His name is Mark Malcolm John. He said he is widowed and has a small daughter who is currently living with his sister. I have already gotten rid of him after reading so many of these stories, even though he had not (yet) asked me for anything. He did pretend to fall for me quickly, so I’m sure that will be coming. Does anyone know this name? He also has a Facebook page with friends, pictures of himself and his daughter, etc. Any help?
(I’d feel terrible if he was for real because I was very rude to him after I read these articles!)

  11. i am worried about my friend. someone named louis e. ebert is saying he is with the us army. And he is from Texas. She has been talking to him for almost a year. He is asking her to request his retirement money. She has even sent a letter to the us army and phoned them to give her bank information.

  12. Jennifer morin says

My aunt met a man on some dating site that claims his name is Shawn purple and is a colonel in the us army in Nigeria he doesn’t come up anywhere on the Internet he’s supposedly from Austin tx has anyone came across this name?

  15. Dont correspond with Sgt Fred Miller on badoo.com, or believe any stories of a soldier not being in the US army anymore, but he is still remaining in Afghanistan and needs money to get out of there. Dont send money to his “so called” agent in Spain or anywhere else. Always ask for their .mil address, they never have one to give. If they dont give you a .mil , they are a fake BIG TIME !!! Stay away ladies.

  16. Has anyone been talking with SGT Fred Miller in Kabul Afghanistan ?

  17. Margaret Rodgers says

Yes Marilyn I get the EXACT same thing that you get. Each and every one of them turns out to be a scammer and want something financial from you. I met only 1 during the last year and a half that was real and was who he said he was. He was Army and was out and doing reserves. He surprised me and came here to California to meet me but told me ahead of time he was married, so I decided it was not a good idea for me to go. I have met a few civilians that turned out real, but not very many. I think I can count them on one hand. The portion is small considering I have made contact with at least 200, maybe more. I don’t go on the dating sites looking for dates. I go on looking for scammers so I can expose them. I take a few at a time, usually 5 or 6, wait for them to hit for money, expose them, then delete and block. I have to admit I do get satisfaction from twisting their heads around. I then Rest up for awhile, then go back for more. I found them on “Are You Interested” from Facebook, Netlog, Badoo, and Shytle. Badoo and Shytle being extremely infected.

Answer to Antonia Ronnone, August 12, 2012
I was romance scammed by a man called Sgt. Rick Steve, said he was served in the U.S. Army at Kabul, Afghanistan. He had a son, 14 years old, also told me he was a widower. I was stupid enough to send money for his “so called release” – never fall for that!! The US Army never beg relatives or others to pay for the soldiers release from their service as soldiers!
Now to my point; I found him on the dating sight badoo.com too… I had him on that chat for almost one year, before we added each other on facebook. He is not a real soldier, he is for sure a romance scammer, live on women’s true feelings and empathy for true soldiers and their vulnerable situation in war-torn areas/countries – a real bad guy! Maybe he is the same one as the guy you mentioned?
    Sincerely Monica Eriksson, Sweden

EVERYONE – I noticed these scammers all have some things in common in their scenarios. First They are from the US somewhere, then have a reason to go somewhere in Africa, usually Nigeria, and then always have some connection to the UK. Like London and Manchester. I had one recently went to London. He sends an email saying he had gone to his friends to stay. I traced his ip number to Scotland. I have found these common denominators in as many as 30 over the last year and a half. What it means exactly, i’m not sure but i find it interesting.

  20. Margaret Rodgers says

TO HELGA -The scammer Rellinger is well documented on these posts going way back as a scammer. He can use any name he wants , at any given time he wants. Thats what they do. Post any picture he steals and paste it to any name he wants.

  21. Margaret Rodgers says

TO CAROL THE CAUTIOUS – HE SOUNDS LIKE A SCAMMER. YOU DIDN’T GIVE HIM TIME TO PLAY OUT HIS GAME – YOU CAUGHT HIM OFF GUARD…. FUNNY. HE DIDN’T WANT TO GIVE UP YET. HE’S THINKING “GIVE ME MORE TIME”, AND I’LL CONVINCE YOU TO GIVE TO ME. BE CAREFUL. DON’T GET HOOKED ON HIM. THATS WHAT HE WILL BE TRYING TO ACCOMPLISH. REMEMBER HE REALLY ONLY WANTS YOUR MONEY . IT’S JUST A JOB TO THEM.

  22. Margaret Rodgers says

TO ALEJANDRA – YOU HAVE A FIRST NAME ON THIS MILLER GUY ? I PRESENTLY HAVE A KELLY MILLER CONTACTING ME. HE SAYS HE IS ARMY. I’M SURE THIS KELLY MILLER IS A SCAMMER. HE JUST DID A FAKE VIDEO ON SKYPE.

  23. Margaret Rodgers says

TO MARILYN – YES HE IS A SCAMMER. I once had one try that line on me too. He suddenly had a son in the hospital and needed a liver transplant. The whole thing is a lie. The Military takes care of their men and THEIR FAMILILES. They have full Military Healthcare. Read some of the posts on here from Sgt Robert McLaughlin. In fact, read many of the posts on here. We have posted these true experiences to help.
