Internet Dating Scam: Fake Soldiers

I just came across a post on “A Soldier’s Perspective” discussing a rather disgusting and disturbing trend that has guys posing as soldiers on Internet dating sites. Here’s the quote from CJ’s:

The latest trend involves trolling internet dating sites and convincing women that they are honorable Soldiers who have fallen in love and would do anything to communicate with the object of their affection. But, because they are deployed to Afghanistan or Iraq, they need you to sign up for an expensive telecommunications service like “Military TELEX” in order to make that happen. They profess unending love as their motivator and, unfortunately, many women have fallen for it.

The BIG red flag here is that the guy is asking for money. NEVER fall for that con.

If you come across anyone on a dating site who is asking you for money, regardless of the reason; block them immediately from further contact and then report them to the internet dating service.

You can also check out who is really behind their email address…

AND / or their telephone number…

To read specific details about about one incident, read CJ’s post “The New Military Dating Scam”.

  1. Dear sir/madam, after getting rid of a scammer3 weeks ago after alot of heartache and loss of money, i met someone else, but aalarm bells are all ready starting to ring, i havnt got the energy to do all the reseach as i did with the other one as just been dianosed with a brain tumour, i wonder if you could check up on him for me, his name is Victor raymond andy. he says hes in the nigerian army, and his wife is dead, but he has a little girl, he has already asked for money and a phone to which i ave him a firm no, yet he still wants to chat, i have a feeling he his a scammer, just need to know for definate…………..thankyou for your help………………..julie

  2. Hi Margaret, I managed to get these profiles closed again… and they probably will show up again in a few days/weeks… I have a long breath! so whenever I see them appear again, I will have them closed again… 2 can play that game! at least I know I have the satisfaction, of keeping him busy, as I don’t have to do a whole lot more, than report his profile and copy – paste the reason for asking facebook to close down these profiles… I made a standard worddocument, where I copied text to send to teh scammers FB-friends to warn them, and a standard FB-customer service message, so I don’t have to put a lot of energy into that!

Ron, please tell your friend to look at all the messages posted here! She definately is being scammed, they play their games at a high psychological level, finding a womans weak emotional spot, trying to get them to feel for them in a short period of time! Have her read up via google on the 419- nigerian scams, military dating scams and have her check out the soldiers name, check the IP-address (messageheader) to see where the mail originates from!! (mostly from Ghana, Nigeria or some other african country!!!) but most important of all: Have her ask for his .mil -mailaddress! Every soldier gets one and he should be able so send her a mail using this address! Don’t be fooled by the picture with her name on! Photo-software can easily manipulate ANY picture! Why did it take 3/4 days for them to send the picture???? And does the picture include the soldiers full-upper profile? So she CAN verify that the man in the picture is actually holding the name? Tell her: if it seems to good to be true, IT IS!!! A lot of what you wrote down, IS a scammers way to get women to fall for them!! And they are good at what they do, because their yearly income, might be, what we earn in a month, so when they “get the fish”… they are lucky!!! (and rich in their own eyes!!!)Tell your friend, that they target maybe over 50 woman at the same time!! They Use Western Union to get their money, because they know, that WU doesn’t have means to get the money back to sender! I hope you can get through to her! before she gets hurt and heartbroken!

TO RON : The most trusting advice you can receive on here is from MSG Robert McLaughlin. I would like to add please see if she will read the many posts on this website as they are from real experiences. At least she will see she has not been the only one duped by these scumbags, and yes she was scammed. His tactics used could not have been any more textbook !! I myself am included on the list. I just grit my teeth every time I read they were successful in getting money and have used one more innocent person. She is lucky to have you as her friend. Last i want to say, delete him and block him because once they get money they don’t want to give up.

  4. MSG Robert McLaughlin says

Ron, that is a textbook scam. Tell your friend to run away, it is all lies.

To Mariette : He’s probably doing it (re-posting) to show you he can, which sadly is true. Usually they re-post using a new name and new picture so I think he is enjoying trying to show you how futile our attempts are. We can remove however just as often as they post up. It’s like fighting the invasion of cockroaches, when they are. My name is now on their list and am getting scam phone calls. Yesterday I told one his call was being recorded and forwarded to the FBI. I said I know your calling from this middle eastern piece of s–t country of yours and making it look like on the phone ID your calling from within the States, his remark was, “you think your FBI can do anything from your country ?” I said so you admit your calling from outside the states…and he went quiet. I said “go ahead and talk and incriminate yourself , the recording is still going to be forwarded.” I hung up at that point so disgusted. I noticed today they have stopped calling.

The “Herbert Raymond mcMaster” Scammers are sure holding on!! As I’m writing this, they have about 5 NEW facebookprofiles openend: all of them with internetpics of the real general, stating he is single (NOT!) or even interested in MEN ???? WTF!!! . I tried to warn the friends they have made on there..(and told them to check out this site) but they just block me, so I guess they will find out for themselves that this is a scammer! (hope they find out before they send money or stuff over!) Too bad, but some people just don’t want to listen and keep believing in fairytales! I just hope Facebook will close down the profiles, they did sofar with the ones that were online a month ago!

  8. Margaret Rodgers says

FOR EVERYONE: I am happy to say Shtyle.fm removed the profile of Walter Bruston for me. Before they got it removed, which took a couple days, three men had contacted me. I noticed when they removed Walter, that those three new ones contacting me were eliminated also. I think there must have been a link of some kind showing in their system that all four were the same person. So if that is true, then I got all his fake accounts removed at once. Oh happy day….

  9. Alright ladies please be careful. These guys will have you mind so screwed up that you will not know what is going on. After doing more research on the guy whom I was talking to and asking questions he kept telling me to check him out, it all could be verified. So, I called the base in CA he was supposed to be from and OMG, they said they had never heard of him.. Well one of the men from there sent me a letter stating they had never heard of him and to cut him loose. well, I sent the copy of the email, and you know it have not heard another word from him. That was on June 14, 2012 and I felt like a real fool after sitting back and thinking about it. Oh how I wish I had seen this site before I got so caught up in him. Well thank goodness I have seen the real light and am so thankful for what I have learned on here. SO PLEASE BE CAREFUL

  10. Margaret Rodgers says

TO JEANETTE ; ‘OMG’ – STOP. MOST DANGEROUS KIND OF SCAMMER. YOU NEED TO POST THE EMAIL ID ON THIS ONE. SOUNDS LIKE HE IS PART OF THE SYNDICATE BECAUSE OF THE TACTIC’S HE USED THAT YOUR REPORTING. THE ONES WHO ARE SYNDICATE ARE VERY PRECISE AND KNOW WHAT THEY ARE DOING AND YES ARE EXTREMELY CLEVER. HE THREW IN THE USUAL THINGS, WIFE DECEASED, CHILDREN AND ETC. HOWEVER THE MILITARY PAYS VERY WELL. HE IS A SCAMMER. THE PERSON HE WANTS YOU TO SEND TO IS THEIR ‘RUNNER’. HE WILL HAVE ALL MONEY SENT TO ONE PERSON. THIS LEAVES NO TRACE TO HIM AND THE RUNNER IS ALSO IN THE SYNDICATE AND THE PERSON AT THE PLACE YOU SEND THE MONEY IS ALSO IN ON THE SCAM AS WELL. ALSO I CRINGED WITH THE REST YOU REPORTED. THE OPENING OF AN ACCOUNT BY YOU ??!!! THEY ARE USING YOU TO TRANSPORT MONEY SCAMMED BY THEM AND PUTTING IT INTO YOUR NAME AND YOUR COUNTRY TO TRY AND ELIMINATE AND SKIRT THE LAW. I THINK IT IS CALLED A 419 NIGERIAN SCAM. GET TO YOUR BANK IMMEDIATELY IF YOU HAVE DONE THIS. EXPLAIN THE SITUATION. YOU COULD BE IN FOR CRIMINAL CHARGES IF YOU DON’T STOP. I AM REALLY WORRIED FOR YOU. PLEASE LET US KNOW YOU HAVE DONE THIS. ONCE THEY GET MONEY FROM YOU THEY WON’T STOP TRYING. THEY SWARM AROUND YOU SLOWLY JUST WAITING FOR THE RIGHT TIMING. YOU MUST DELETE, AND BLOCK HIM. THE ONLY WAY TO GET RID OF THEM.

  11. Margaret Rodgers says

TO Gail Peters – I started chuckling when I read “he said his bank burned down” – that is a new one. Geez – well your doing good reporting the name he is using , here, and content of info he is trying to use. Notice he did not know what an .mil address is. Yes he sounds stupid enough to be a scammer. You did good. The best we can do is report them everywhere we can , delete, and block them.

  12. please what do you know of sgt. Collins Adams Mateo of M3 unit, his commmander is Lt. Col. Timothy M. Stauffer? Collins says he is serving in Afghanistan. gave me ”
Armydepartmentunit@usa.com” address to write to find out if he is allowed to make a video call.
when i asked for his mil-addy he asked what is that?
Then a couple of days ago he told me how he was sad and I could help. His bank had caught fire and he had to get another account within 3 days.. I did tell him that the army would help him, also that i did not have an account. Haven’t heard anymore since then so guess he was a scammer. cheers gayle but I do want him stopped

  13. I met someone on tagged claiming to be military and when he told me anything i was able to confirm it so he is very smart i even found a family name of a relative and when i ask his sons middle name it matched that persons and how his wife passed of cancer but he did not ask for money for phone or travel but say that what he does get thru the army is not enough and he likes to be able to go to city and eat and stuff cause everything costs thru the german based camp marmal so i sent a hundred bucks here and there he said i send to one person in state he keeps ten buck and the person that gets it for him keeps 20 and he gets the rest so there is 3 of them i am guessing. i told him i cant send money anymore and he still talks to me so thats confusing. but still want to kn ow what part of the scam was when he had me open an account at a bank for military people so he can have money put in it from an investment he made over seas? this is a new scam?

  14. Mariette says

Lynda, Margaret, Sharon: Ladies, keep up your spirits! And don’t , not even for a minute, blame yourselves for falling for these scams! They had me fooled for over a week, untill I busted their asses! Learn the lesson, have a good cry, pick yourselves up and start enjoying your lives again! Life can be so great! Don’t let these F***** take that away from you! I know, easy to say, but harder to do.(I had to learn this myself!).. I now live by the following rule myself: The only victim for not being able to forgive, is ME, As long as I’m not able to forgive anyone that hurt me in the past, I’m keeping myself in the pain and hurt from the past and thereby don’t enjoy what each new day brings! My heart cries for you all! and I pray for you ladies to be set free to smile again, waking up to another wonderful day…

Heather: Good Job!! Ik still try to get the skype-profiles closed, but Skype doens’t respond! the “mcMaster scammer” I was dealing with, is probably the same that has been scamming you… and Yes, he called me some very (not repeatable) names as well 😉 So I knew I had HIM hooked and let him drown in his own lies… lol!

  15. Trust what Magaret Rodgers is telling you. Trust what Sgt. McLaughlin is telling you. These guys are scammers. I fell prey and lost alot of money to one to of course – never used the money to come home… He knew everything about the town he claimed to live in and even knew names of people in the church. They are SMART and SNEAKY! Beware!!

  16. Margaret Rodgers says

To Mariette – Thanks for telling them the WAY IT IS !! Now if only it would sink in. Sharon – i also have trust issues now too because of them. I found my original scammer today, back using his page on this dating site he was on a year ago. It is Shtyle.fm. I found 3 women on there as friends. I felt my blood go cold. I notified two of them what he was, but the third one had her page put to private and I could not contact her. I then wrote a letter to Shtyle and informed them he was a scammer and how he had swindled money from me. I am waiting to see if they take his profile off. He uses the name Walter Bruston, with email of walter_bruston@rocketmail.com, and he is also known as Micheal Jurgen. Over time, he has sent me 4 pictures. Two I traced coming from Nigeria, one from Kuwait, and one from Waterloo, England. Now there were emails with each picture, so as I see it, he has accomplices, which makes me think he belongs to the scamming syndicate. All I can say is stay away from these people. They will chew you up, and spit you out and not look back. This one contacted me on my Facebook page too. I knew nothing about such people at the time. I fell for it all, sink, line, and hook. All the lies I see you ladies getting, he used on me, almost every single one. I am still paying back the money I borrowed for him. I may see daylight in another year.

Hi I am writing this from New Zealand,I to have been chatting to the so called now Major General herbert McMasters………..did a lot of soul searching and researching as i was curious as to how such a high calibre man as himself had time to find me on sykpe and want to chat to me…..it didnt add up as to how he had the time…….was always online and when I queryed, this scammer always had an answer.
Anyway it only took 1 week for whoever to ask me for money to have his security papers and personal belongings in a trunk paid for into a united nations account so they could arrive before he did. By this time I had found and read more about the real Major General herbert McMasters and knew exactly where he was and at ( am a very curious person) any way i have learnt a lot about this man and congratulate him on his great achievment.
I have however let this scammer know what he is…..wont tell you what he called me….lol

TO ANIKA – READ THE POSTS ON HERE..HEED OUR WARNING. HE WILL NOT COME ON CAMERA BECAUSE HE IS A SCAMMER AND CANNOT SHOW HIS REAL FACE. THAT WOULD BE LIKE TURNING HIMSELF IN…PLUS HE DOESN’T WANT TO GET ARRESTED AND HE DOESN’T WANT YOU TO SEE HE IS PROBABLY A BLACK NIGERIAN, WHICH MOST OF THEM ARE. BE SMART, DELETE HIM AND BLOCK HIM OTHERWISE YOUR INVITING A WHOLE LOT OF TROUBLE FOR YOURSELF. ONCE THEY GET MONEY THEY DIG THEIR CLAWS IN DEEPER AND DEEPER. I KNOW !!!

  21. Margaret Rodgers says

TO NINA – NONE OF IT IS TRUE. AND JAMES RELLINGER HAS BEEN REPORTED ON THIS SITE BEFORE. A SCAMMER IS A LIAR, LOW LIFE SCUM PIECE OF SEWER. HE ONLY WANTS YOUR MONEY. IT IS A JOB TO HIM. IT IS ALL JUST AN ACT. BELIEVE NONE OF IT. DELETE AND BLOCK IS THE ONLY WAY TO GET RID OF THEM BECAUSE THEY DON’T GIVE UP.

  22. Mariette says

Anika, it is BS that they can’t talk to you on skype!! every soldier is allowed to contact family!! And if he WAS on a secret mission, he SURE wasn’t allowed to tell you! So his ass is busted right then and there!! Please stop any contact! learn how these scammers work by reading through the posts on this website! and please don’t fall for their tricks!! They are very good at what they do… attacking you on a personal level! hoping that you won’t find out that they are scamming you! block any means of contact with this guy! and report him to the ISP!

Nina: The same for you!! He sure is a scammer! ask his .mil-address!! He WON’T be able to give it to you… and don’t let him tell you “he isn’t Allowed!” That is BS!!
How long did it take for him to “fall in love with you” ? You’re the “center of his universe”….the ONLY one he wants to spent his life with? A real guy would want to get into your pants! and not sweettalk! They tell you what YOU want to hear, not what a “normal” guy would say! That’s fishy in itself! You can be sure that he will be asking for money, or a phone, or stuff in a few days! Trace the IP!!! (instructions were posted here on may 30 on how to trace the RIGHT IPnumber! ) Read the comments posted here and keep asking questions to verify everything you’re being told!! Take care!

  23. I had a guy to contact me from Match.com and his name is supposedly Micheal R Reynolds and is so in love with me he dreams about me. How do these guys getoff with this type of ordeal? He is also known as James Rellinger from Columbus, GA and Woodstock, and Marietta, and Douglasville GA. I checked his profile and he is a Scout for the U.S. Army and has been for over 4 years. HELP PLEASE!! I do not know what is true anymore.

  24. Mariette says

Anika, please stop any contact!! Trace the IP-address! I posted a comment on may 30th. on how to do so! ASK for the .mil address!!! The only SURE WAY to know if he’s military! Please save yourself from falling for these guys! They are no good! Read the stories that are posted here! and see that your’s isn’t any different!!! These scammers know what they are doing and depend on us, to believe every story they try to sell us. Look on the internet, verify your facts given by these scammers! and again, thanks Robert, for clearing up another item about your paycheck! I’ll post it on my website as well!

  25. thank u.. so soldiers have their money with them???
and he told me he cant do cam to cam.. for security purposes.. so he never showed up on skype or ym.. now its certain that this is really a scam.. he even told me that his friend is coming to give the money to him..this really bothers me.. i am very upset..
