eHarmony, Inc.At the end of March, eHarmony will launch Compatible Partners, its new dating site for the gay community.

Why now? Why so late in the game you might wonder.

Well, the site arises from the fact that eHarmony’s membership is restricted to heterosexuals, a limitation that was challenged in 2005 when a discrimination lawsuit was filed against eHarmony.

eHarmony initially fought the challenge on the basis that it has a “scientific method” for matching singles and the formula used to match customers is based on research of straight, married couples.

The case however was found to have probable cause and eHarmony’s compromise is ‘Compatible Partners’, set to open on March 31st. “It’s something we’re going to be fully supporting as a line of business,” says Paul Breton, a spokesman for eHarmony.

Says the Boston Globe, “it might be the first dating site whose owners didn’t really want to create it.”

What remains to be seen is whether the LGBT community will welcome the site with so many gay and lesbian online dating options currently available.

We’ll keep you posted.
